SotC: Boulevard Of Broken Dreams - Green Day
Mitch's POV
As I walked along the pathway towards Budder City, I thought to myself: Where would I go? What would happen if I actually decided to not return? Would I undergo a new identity? Of course I would start a new life, but how?
Ryan was right. I had nowhere to turn. No one to trust. There was Jerome, but I couldn't go back to my former home. Everyone now knew me as either a thief, a nobody, or the boy who wanted attention from the prince.
I paused in my stride, inhaled, turned around, and glanced down from the hill overshadowing Star City. The town looked so beautiful at night. The lights from the castle shined up into the night sky. I could barely hear any of the noises besides for the wind blowing in my ears. My cape slightly waved as wind passed by. I'd never gotten much of a height advantage outside of the shack, so it felt relaxing, and I never wanted to leave that area for the rest of my life. But I couldn't just stand in one place on the middle of the road forever.
When I spun to face the road ahead, I accidentally bumped into a dark figure who was carrying a load of large items. I squinted my eyes to find out it was a young man. He fell the floor while I stood silently, my mouth wide open. His dark hair was wiped over one side of his forehead and his dark eyes shined bright with hope, something I'd seen in Jerome's eyes as well. He wore a tee shirt made to look like a suit and black jeans. A black jacket draped over his shoulders. Although he seemed childish, I trusted him enough to not believe he would hurt me.
"I'm so sorry!" I bent down and helped him to his feet.
"No, it's my fault," the young man told me as he wiped his hands on his pants. "I was the one who bumped into you."
"It was totally me!" I knelt yet again to help him pick up his items. As I glared at each one, I realized they were books.
"I'm not gonna let you take the blame for what I did..." He argued, his arms crossed.
"Seriously, no big deal." I handed the young man his books.
"No no no, it is."
"Dude, I'm used to getting the blame." Glancing up into the man's eyes for the second time, I cracked a smirk.
"That's sad." The man kept a straight face.
"My life in one word."
He sighed and lifted the books higher up his chest. "On a happier topic, I'm heading home from picking up these books from the library."
I raised an eyebrow. "There's a library around here?"
"Yeah, it doesn't have a name, but it's pretty cool and the guys like to read stuff from there."
"Who?"
"My roommates."
"Ah."
"The name's Preston! Preston Frags!" Preston hefted his items into one arm so he could reach out towards me with the other.
I only smiled. "Nice to meet you, Preston... but I must be on my way..."
He dropped his hand and placed it on the bottom of the books. "Where you going?"
"Budder City... I suppose..."
"You suppose?"
"Yeah... not quite sure where I'm off to."
