Scorpius began to develop a crush on Rose sometime during the end of their 3rd year. By this time Albus is hyper aware of the fact that Scorpius isn't straight. Scorpius himself is just blissfully unaware.
During their 4th year he continuously asked Rose out and would go through these big romantic gestures to impress her. This was also around the time Albus realized he had feelings for Scorpius.
Albus just wanted to be a good friend and let Scorpius figure it out on his own though. He knew Scorpius was confused and probably oblivious to his own feelings.

When fifth year had begun Scorpius began to take notice of how good Albus looked. From an objective straight guys perspective of course.
So much so, during class he would often catch himself looking at Albus more than Rose. Then he'd shift his attention back to the red-headed girl and try to push out any thoughts of his bestfriend.
