Bath, UK, Earth, June 2019.
"Blue or purple?" Violet asked her best friend, Lily Hale, whilst holding up two very similar skater dresses. She didn't usually deliberate over what to wear, but this was different. Clara Greene's house party was going to be huge. School was finally over for the summer. Everyone was going to be there. Including Toby Spencer. So she obviously had to look her best.
Lily, who was lounging in Vi's desk chair, already wearing a burnt orange summer dress, that complimented her (recently re-dyed) flaming red hair, paused for a second considering the two options. "That one!" she said, pointing to the dress in Vi's left hand. "And it's violet, not purple!" she added.
"Ok, I trust your decision!" remarked Vi. She headed into the bathroom down the hall to change out of her jeans and T-shirt.
Middy, who was sitting on his bed, on the windowsill, rolled his eyes. Or the feline approximation of an eye roll.
Having spent eleven years as a chartreux cat, sometimes Middy almost forgot that he could be anything else, and other times the small stature and lack of opposable thumbs irked him so much, he would do anything to be anything else. The Harmonizer kept rejecting his requests to have his shifting reinstated. He wouldn't be able to keep up the ruse she said.
Finally, Vi emerged from the bathroom. She was in the much-deliberated dress of her namesake colour, her usual summer sandals, eyes heavily outlined, and long black hair curled down her back.
Middy admitted that she did look nice, the dress and curled hair complemented her light brown skin and the make-up emphasized her hazel eyes. Middy was used to seeing Vi dressed up and ready to go out, but he was suddenly hit by the fact his ward, was not a young child anymore. With her eighteenth birthday in September, time was running out on Middy's mission. Four months to go. He had to keep her safe for just four more months, then everything would be fine, and he could re-join the Guardians.
Lily seemed to be thinking along the same lines "You look great! That's deffo the outfit to wear! Toby will be all over you!"
Vi blushed a deep red and nervously ran a hand through her hair. "Thanks, Lils, I just really hope tonight we can make it official, proper boyfriend/girlfriend and all that..."
"He'd be crazy not to, I mean everyone knows something is going on with you two..."
"Erm, thanks, I think!" said Vi, cheeks deepening. "You ready?"
Lily nodded and Vi picked up her small black bag out from the mess of discarded clothes strewn across her bed.
Before leaving, she went over to the window and gave her cat a quick pet. "Latter's Middy! We're off to Clara's. Have a nice nap!" Lily chucked; she always did when Vi addressed her pet like that. Oh, if only she knew! And Middy had no intentions of spending the rest of the night napping on the windowsill.
He waited until he heard the front door close and the girl's footsteps fade as they headed down the driveway, before he dashed down the stairs, and straight out the cat flap into the lazy summer sunshine. Clara Greene, this evening's party host lived only a short walk from the Talloways, and Middy was able to follow Vi and Lily, jumping shadow to shadow.
Matilda Hale, wearing a very short emerald green dress was waiting outside the corner shop and joined them in heading up to Clara's. She was carrying a large handbag, from which a clinking noise emitted as they walked.
"I wish my mum was as easy going as yours Mattie!" moaned Lily "She nearly didn't let me go out tonight! Had to tell her I was just going around Vi's!"
