*flashback to 9 years ago, shortly after Benedict went into a coma*

MARTIN POV

I was really anxious to see my first patient ever. His name was Benedict Cumberbatch, and he was in a coma.

I had been training to be a doctor for more than 10 years, after my career as an actor failed. I had always wanted to be an actor but I never got a job, no one ever believed in me. I then decided that medical school was a worthy endeavour.

I remember Benedict from before the coma. He was in a few films and even played Stephen Hawking in a BBC drama. I thought he was an immense actor. He was succeeding somewhere that not only is it hard to do so, but he was succeeding somewhere that I couldn't, and I respected that. Well, until he fell into this coma.

I felt so sorry for him. I opened the door and saw him laying on the bed in a hospital nightgown, the starchy white sheets tucked under his armpits, his arms lying delicately on the bed next to him. I noticed that the hospital wristband matched the colour of the hospital gown.

"Matching clothing items, eh?" I chuckled in a forced, sad manner.

His auburn hair was neat and short, clinging to his head a bit too tightly, like a tawny leather cap. His face was angelically serene and beautiful. He seemed to be too perfect to be trapped in this state. Why do bad things always happen to good people?

"I guess the good thing is, you aren't aware of any suffering right now. You have no idea that you may be like this permanently." I tried to smile, but just couldn't manage it. My first case was with someone who I may never hear the voice of. I may never have gotten to know Benedict Cumberbatch, and that wasn't great for my first job as a doctor.

I had been told that I'd be administering medicine, maintaining exercise on Benedict's body and I'd probably have to do a lot of other, less savoury, duties as well because of the lack of staff. Just one of the perks of the NHS, I guess.

An old lady came around the corner, giving me a smile as she walked past.
"Ah, you must be John, Benedict's new doctor, no?"
"Yes, I am."
"Why, aren't you young, you must've gotten into medical school pretty quickly."
"Well, yes I guess so." I said awkwardly.

"Well, I'm Mrs. Hudson. I am one of the nurses here, I have been here with Benedict since the start."
"Nice to meet you."
"Would you like a cup of tea, dear?"

As soon as she said that, I knew we were going to get along.
