A station worker walked on the platform, people who meet passengers stood here too, and among them a boy-porter paced by.

John and Bernard stood near the glass doors of the station, watching the platform intently. Mary promised to show up later.

"We've been standing here for an hour," growled Morel, who had gone out and smoked half a dozen times. "I feel like this lady has made a fool of us after all."

"She won't, trust me," John Smith said, grinning. "The train has not arrived yet."

"Are you even sure this Mr. Taylor is coming today? Not tomorrow?"

"My customer won't lie. So we'll meet him soon."

"And you're sure he takes the diamonds with him? He was going to sell them in Marseille, wasn't he?"

"Bernie, what are you so worried about?"

"Because I don't want to sit here for a hell of a long time and then find one of his underwear in his suitcase."

"Oh, come on! Mary will give him a very warm welcome at the station, and you'll see the diamonds."

"Yeah, if she only won't go away with his diamonds."

"What are you talking about? She'll do this, she'll do that... Trust me, she can't fool us."

"Just because she's told a sweet lie to you doesn't mean she won't get away with the diamonds."

"Trust me, she won't do it. There's just one door to the outside. This door. She can't get past us."

They were both silent for a couple of minutes, each thinking about their own thoughts.

John, watching the people on the platform, wondered how it would go now. He hoped that Mary would succeed. He would hate himself if her deception was discovered.

After her story, the American realized that he only loves her even more. It was weird, but he was fascinated by her complicated story. And he certainly would not leave her now. Yes, diamonds are fine, too, but ... but Mary is even more precious to him now. Now John knew for sure that after this case, he, along with the money and Mary, would go somewhere far, far away.

The only question is the amount of money that each of them would receive when they gave the diamonds to their customer. And this worried John a lot because at first, he was not even going to share it with Bernie. According to his original plan, Bernie would do all the dirty work, and John would just take all the money for himself, and that is it. But his plan was edited by Mary with her sudden appearance. Of course, at that time, he had thought that he would leave her with nothing too, but who would have thought that he would be able to change his plans and start to like Mary? He is an egoist in the highest degree, and he is ready to share the money he received for the diamonds with her. Unthinkable!

But Smith had already made up his mind. He would proceed according to the original plan. Bernie will not get anything. Today, he would make sure that he and Mary left Bernie alone in the apartment and call the police, forcing them to come and arrest Morel. John thought it was a great plan. And he does not feel sorry for Bernie, they are not even friends. All this time, John had acted out of nothing but calculation and unwillingness to do all the dirty work himself. So, he had no regrets about what he is about to do.

"Here she is," Morel interrupted, nudging him in the ribs, and alerting him to Mary's presence.

John immediately noticed Mary on the platform. She is wearing a light black raincoat, black gloves, and heels. On her head is a small black hat with a veil covering her face. There is in front of her a suitcase they had bought yesterday, and this morning they had filled it with old newspapers.
