————————————

The girl waddled through the freezing cold water, her feet now numb to the pain. Her beautiful brown skin now turning pale brown due to the freezing temperatures of the lake. Her blue eyes searched desperately for any food that could be placed on the table for breakfast, her breath caught in the back of her throat so she wouldn't scare any fish away.

At that moment, two small green fish swam past her. Not wasting any time she dove into the water after them.

Panicked, the fish had tried to swim away, but were caught in her large hands. The girl grabbed them and pushed herself up, a smile going across her face as she placed them into the bag that resided on her waist. She licked her chapped lips and looked into the small tote bag. "Three fishes, eight clams, one dead otter."

A small laugh erupted from her mouth as she began to slowly walk out of the water. "Wonder what everyone else is doing."

-

The girl made her way into the faint little town, smiling at the men who were beginning their tasks of herding the animals for feeding. She silently hoped to herself that there was a bit more food like last time, it was nice to have a second helping of food. But, that hasn't happened in two months.

Making her way past the men she walked towards the edge of town and to the little bungalow her family resided in.

Inside her mother was placing dried meat on the table, sugar seeping through the small holes. A warm fire brewing in the corner of the room. The small woman coated her hands in a brown, syrup like substance and began to slowly tread across the meat.

Not wasting a moment, she asked, "What all did you get for us to cook?"

The only noises made in the house besides the girl scrummaging through her bag was the cackling of the fire, and the noise the meat made whenever her mother pressed on it.

"Fish, clams, and otter."

A gentle smile spread across her mother's face. The woman was glad to enough to cook for all three of her kids. Maybe even some to share for that brute of a husband, if he wasn't spending the night with his second lady. But even if he was, he would come down to grab some of the honey meat.

"Take the bones out, chop up the fish." She asked the girl to do.

Two other girls sat on the floor watching intently, wondering if they'll have something to do.

"Karina, you take the white meat out and crush the shells into grain." The woman turned her head to the floor to make sure the girl was getting up. The other girl sat on the floor still awaiting her task. "Karen you are to skin the other, salt him, and wash him of all blood."

All three girls stood up and began to get to work. Despite the fact the girls wished not to work at all and to just sit and play, they knew it would pay off in the end. A beautiful meal, and happy father.

Sadly, what happened was not expected.

——
Hours later, maybe around 9am the food was now sitting warmly on the table.
