"Alright!"
You felt kind of bad being so excited to beat your friends, but the way your body was begging to be able to crash was clouding your better judgement, "Who're we picking?"
"Whoever, it doesn't matter," Rin replied. Fuck, did you want you want to hit him over the head with a brick. Can he stop being so 'my heart is cold, no one understands me' for like five seconds?
You turned to Tokimitsu instead, hoping he'd give you an actual answer, "What about you? Who do you think?"
He meekly pointed to a member on Team White, who was currently watching your interaction in anticipation. You nodded and pointed toward Bachira, "C'mon, let's get going," you called.
You all turned toward the victory gate, not waiting up for him.
A big smile was planted on your face.
This was, by far, the best night you'd had at Blue Lock so far.
That was for one reason, and one reason only. Your team has been the only one yet to get to the fourth stage. And what did everyone on your team share in common?
They all knew your secret.
Never mind that that sounded like some shit straight out of every cable tv-show, but you were currently walking back to your team's dorm. Except, your binder was in your hand. As uncomfortable as bras still are, they aren't even comparable to how annoying that thing could be. The utterly relief you were rejoicing in was unimaginable. And, to think, you would be free until someone else gained a four player team.
Man, did you hope that wouldn't be anytime soon.
You opened the door to the room, not minding what ever the hell the guys were doing. Hell, Rin was probably in a corner muttering about how much he hates his brother.
Jumping onto your bottom bunk on the side of the room, you cracked open your book. Hopefully, it'd put you to sleep soon. At this point, you were so pumped full of adrenaline to keep you running, you didn't know if you'd be able to fall asleep for the next week.
You tried to focus on the words on the pages, but the staggering silence of the room kept popping to the forefront of your mind every few seconds. You turned to your right, only to find Bachira and Tokimitsu staring at you.
Your eyebrows knitted together, "What?"
"..."
"Hello?" you urged when they just continued to stare at you.
"Sorry..." Bachira started, "It's just weird, it's like- you really are a girl."
Tokimitsu shook in his seat, "No! I don't think you're weird, [Surname], I swear!" he blurted.
Rin turned to face the interaction from his chair at the back of the room, "You idiots act like you've never seen a woman in your goddamn life. Plus, it's just [Name], at that."
You scoffed, "Fuck you too, asshole."
It was your first night of peace in what felt like an eternity.
So, naturally, of course you couldn't fucking fall asleep.
You studied the wooden beams on the underside of Bachira's bed from your bottom bunk to the best of your abilities in the dark. The only noises in the room was the hum of the blasting air conditioner and the light snores from Tokimitsu and Bachira.
Your eyes stung from exhaustion, yet no matter what you did you just couldn't shut down. Resigned, you pulled off the sheets from your body and carefully placed your feet down on the floor. Tip-toeing ever so silently, you traversed to the door without waking up any of the other occupants, hopefully.
As per Blue Lock hallway procedure, you sent the security cameras a sweet view of your middle finger before continuing on your way. The sound of your footsteps padding off the floors reverberated against the walls while you whistled to yourself, trying to figure out a way to fall asleep. That boring book you had was supposed to do the trick, but Bachira insisted the lights had to be shut off, and you haven't eaten enough carrots to read that shit in the dark.
The lights, of what you assumed to be this building's designated gym, were still on, spilling out from under the door. You pulled down the cold handle, swinging open the door to figure out what someone was doing in the gym this late.
"Are you sleeping right now?" you weren't really sure if he would answer you if he was, it just seemed like an uncomfortable position to be resting in.
Rin cracked open one of his eyes, "What are you doing here?" he asked from his criss-crossed position on the floor.
You sat down near him, knees tucked under your chin, "The lights were on and I couldn't fall asleep."
He folded his arms as he stared at you, "So you decided to come harass me?"
"Yup, who wouldn't enjoy my amazing company?"
"Me," he deadpanned.
You sighed defeatedly and laid back on the ground, staring up at the blank ceilings, "Are you really only here to take down your brother?" It was a genuine question. You'd only seen him sparingly after being recruited for Japan's team, but he'd changed a lot from when you were younger. He'd looked up to his brother like he was an angel on earth.
You couldn't see him, but you heard him shuffling his position in his silence, "Of course," he finally said, "Don't you have bitter feelings for that bastard too?"
"Nah, I don't let it bother me that much anymore." You did, for a while. The times Sae came back to his house, he would join the neighborhood scrimmages. As kids, you and the Itoshi brothers would constantly formulate the victorious team amongst yourselves. Spending every moment after school rushing between each other's houses, planning tournaments for the weekend. You had to give them the credit, they were really what cultivated your love for the sport.
Although, those late nights on their porch and their chalk drawings on your driveway all went down the drain one time Sae came back. "You can't be on my team anymore," he said. "You'll never reach the level to compete with me, just give it up."
At the time, you didn't know what had gotten in to him. You just want to play a game with your friends, for old time's sake. You considered yourself good, quickly climbing your prefecture's ranks for girls' football. Surely, he was just kidding.
Much to your dismay at the time, he was not. He refused to talk to you again, insistent on the fact you just weren't good enough. Over time, you eventually lost connection with Rin too, he was too preoccupied with his own hurt from his brother's words. You, to this day, still don't know the whole story, just that one day his opinion on his brother flipped 360, and you could connect the dots some. You hadn't seen Sae in what felt like a lifetime, and you didn't expect to anytime soon.
"You shouldn't either," you continued, "going international just shoved his ego too far up his ass."
"Yeah, it fucking did," Rin grumbled at your side. "It's different though, you wouldn't get it."
You laughed softly under your breath, "You really had to ruin the moment with that corny 'you'll never understand me' emo shit? C'mon."
The both of you were silent for a few moments, and you took a deep breath, "You don't have to tell me what happened. I know, it probably really sucked. I know how much he meant to you. But," you pushed yourself up by your elbows to face him, "can you show me whatever you were doing before?"
"You mean my meditation you rudely interrupted?" he asked with a raised brow.
You nodded, "Yeah."
He stared at you for a while before sighing, resigned, "Okay. Go get a mat."
