"What did you need Cole?"
"Well I figured maybe you'd want a job, I kept a spot open just for you"
"That would be great actually"
"Okay great, so, it's being a mail man for the prison, delivering mail to everyone's cells and the right department, if you complete your job successfully, you'll earn $15 an hour"
"That's not the worst"
"You can spend up to 5 hours a day doing your job"
"So you're telling me I can earn $75 a day?"
"Yes, which means you can study, buy items permitted by the prison and you could even send money to your family. What you do with it is up to you"
"That actually doesn't sound like the worst, thank you"
"You're welcome, I'm sorry I couldn't get you anything better, it's the best we had available"
"It's better than nothing at all"
"Okay, you start in 3 hours after lunch and your free time"
"Thanks, bye now"I stood up and left the room, Cole had something intense, like a fire, in his eyes. I can't tell if it was anger or passion, but it was something.
I went back to lunch to finish my meal before going to the courtyard for some exercise. Before depression hit me, I was a very well sculpted man. I saw some of the bigger inmates standing around, they scared me, I was just a weak little man compared to them. I quickly grabbed a set of 10kg weights and began 20 bicep curls on each side, this repeated for a good 20 rounds. I could feel some of the men's unwelcoming gazes upon me. I quickly threw the weights back into the stand and made my way to the library. I was a very well educated man after all, I decided to use the remaining hour of my free time studying something new. Searching the book cases up and down until I found my dream inside of one section of books, medical science. I gasped, the collection was astounding, yes I was a business man, but my true dream was to become a paediatric nurse, for children. I've always loved helping people and to help kids while they're sick would be amazing, to see the small glimpse of satisfaction as I poke funny faces at them, it's all I've ever dreamed of. I grabbed the introductory to medicine textbook off the shelf and went up to the librarian.
"Hello?"
"Yes?"
"I'd like to borrow this book out, please."
"Alright, if you damage it in any way, $150."
"Understood."
"Alright, last name?"
"Seavey, my ID is 4709"
"Alright, it's all yours, bring it back when you're done."
"Thank you."I took the textbook back to my cell to put in my small storage cabinet, when I see Cole next I'll have to ask about getting some stationery to take some notes. If I want specialised paediatrician textbooks, I'll have to enrol in a university course through the prison which I am very interested in doing.
