"C'mon! Lillian! We're going to be late to the airport!" My mum shouts up at me. Crap. I haven't even gotten dressed yet.
I jump out and see a pile of clothes at the foot of my sleeping bag. Once I'm dressed I shove anything still in my room into a bag. There's not much left so I zip up my bag and head to the door.
I look back at my room. Last time I'm going to see it. I remember how stressed mum gets when we don't follow her schedule exactly so I quickly whisper. "Goodbye."
I rush downstairs to see no ounce of proof anyone lived here. Only the recent footprints in the carpet. "Don't tell me you only just got up?" Kade questions. He's been my best friend since I could talk. He's about a year younger than me but he's the only friend I have and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
"What? Me? No!" I smirk catching my reflection in a pane of glass. My hair sticks up in unnatural positions. I forgot to brush my hair. I quickly run my fingers only catching knots.
He grabs the bag from me and walks out to the car. Today is the day we make the biggest change in our life. Our dads work as pilots for the RAF so that's how we know each other. They have been transferred to America of all places, reason unknown to me and Kade no matter how much we press for answers. We were perfectly content with our life here in London. But due to our dads being transferred across the world almost, me and Kade will be moving together as it'll be hard to live here without our dads. At least I'll know someone.
I look around my house for the last time, then close the door behind me. I walk up to the car while the rest of our furniture gets loaded into a moving van. I don't know how a moving van is going to follow us to America but, probably by cargo plane or boat.
I slide into the back next to my brother Frank. "Look who decided to show!" I see my dad looking at me from the rear view mirror of the back.
"Ha. Wait, so are we meeting Kade and his family at the airport? Like driving in separate cars?" I ask as I see Kade get into a different car.
"Well, unless there's an extra dozen hidden to my eyes then yes." My dad mocks me while smirking.
We all sit in silence as the radio is on in the background. I look over to see Frank looking out the window mumbling to himself. "What you doing over there Frank?" I ask.
"Nothing... just playing eye spy." He mumbles.
"By yourself? Weirdo. Do want a partner to make it more exciting?" I suggest.
He perks up and looks up at me with excitement. "Yes please!
We play eye spy until I see the airport roll into view. As I grab my stuff out of the boot I see Kade running up to me oddly excited. "WE'RE MOVING TO AMERICA!" He screams.
I just laugh as I drag my bags through the doors of the airport to get checked in. "I have no idea what your so excited about. You know we'll know no one right? New neighbours and neighbourhood." I point out.
"Why do you have to always be so moody and negative? All of those things you just said means meeting new people! Expanding our horizons..." he says dramatically. I just roll my eyes not being able to keep the grin off my face.
Once checked through we wander around all the shops looking at cool souvenirs and messing around with toys. We sit down and wait until our flight is called to board. We take a lift up to the different gates and head to ours. The one thing I WAS looking forward to was going on a plane for the first time and with Kade next to me no less.
I settle next to Kade as he puts our carryons over head. He sits next to us still having that jumpy energy from earlier even after from running around. Me on the other hand is taking deep breaths preparing for the take off. Kade looks over to see me and places a hand on mine. "It's okay. You'll be fine. I'm here." He smiles warmly then starts to jump in his seat to make me laugh. It works. Soon our laughs echo the plane as we're the only ones making noise.
"Hi. Madam, sir could we please ask you to quiet down as some passengers are trying to sleep." She smiles passive aggressively. She walks off and as soon as she does me and Kade giggle quietly.
"We both know she was just pissed off at us." He whispers but then laughs more but I cover his mouth.
"Shhhhh! You can't say that!" I whisper fiercely but he knows it's not serious from my smile.
"You know, there might've been something in the sandwich's we ate because no else seems as hyper." He laughs even more so I have to put my hand on his mouth again.
We mess around granting a lot of side glances from other people for the rest of the flight. Luckily our family's couldn't get seats near us...
Suddenly, I'm aware of the plane again as the pilots voice rings out. He tells everyone to buckle in for the decent. I reach for Kades hand again as I close my eyes shut and breathe slowly.
I feel this weird sensation in my eyes, like a whistling as I struggle to hear out of them. "Lillian... you can open yours eyes now. We've landed." He says soothingly.
I open them to find we're just going along the runway as if we were in a car. "Okay... I've decided I don't like planes. Can we not do that again?" I huff shaking.
"Well, I don't suppose we're going back to England anytime soon..." he trails off looking out the window.
"Just sunk in huh? Don't worry. Like you said it's an opportunity to get to know people. You know-" I get into position to do the dramatic hand gestures Kade did.
"Expanding our horizons..." he just laughs at me as we get up.
We walk off the plane and suddenly the change of weather hits you like a bag of dirt. I'm definitely not ready for America
