Prompt: You fell in love with the person you were ordered to kill.

(y/n's pov)

The evening sun cast long shadows on the sandy touched ground, its slanting rays giving a warm orange tinge to the sky. It would have been incredible to admire the awe-inducing mirage of the dwindling dusk with a precious someone, gently holding them in your arms as you share the fruits of a long day at work, basking in their presence as though they were as radiant as the setting sun itself. You smiled and tore your gaze away from the faraway plains, tilting your head slightly downwards to face the smiley dimple-faced kid that had his head in your lap and you couldn't help but wonder what did you do in your previous life to have ever deserved to be in this prevailing position.

"Hey," he cheekily yapped, gently flicking his index finger upwards to boop you on the tip of your nose. "What are you thinking about? You look kinda troubled, is this date not to your liking?" His demeanour shifted slightly, his usual teasing whines becoming a little more concerned at your sudden silence. You took in a shaky breath, insistent on not letting your facade drop even for a millisecond before putting on a seemingly affectionate smile, one that he had possibly never seen you wear even once in his years of knowing you.

"Yeah, I'm fine, I'm fine for now." You breathed out, closing your eyes as you snaked your arm around his slim, toned waist. "Could you close your eyes for a second?" You asked, a sliver of nervousness managed to sneak its way out of your throat. Though confused, he complied. You cursed internally. You wished he didn't listen. You wished he would whine and deny your request, claiming that he wouldn't be able to see your cute little face and cute little eyes if he had his shut tight. You wished he was far, far away, perhaps on the mountains across the far end of the beach, that he wasn't here in front of you in your arms at this very instant. Most of all, you wished he hadn't met you that one "fateful" day at the local coffee shop when you purposely bumped into him and spilt your latte on his knitted cardigan, creating the opportunity for you and him to meet again, for your relationship to flourish-- for you to fall in love.

As you let your hand fall limp to your side, a single tear threatened to slip out of its cage. Once that first drop was let loose, the rest followed in an unbroken stream. The clang of metal was reduced to a soft thud on the cushion of the beach floor. "I'm sorry, I'm so, so sorry San." You couldn't keep your mask up any longer, aggressively sniffling to keep the tears at bay. turning your head away from the crimson that had started to blossom in the side of his torso. "I-" He struggled to speak, wincing with each ragged breath he strained to take in. "I knew from the start. I knew," He took a pained pause. "That you were one of them." Then, he smiled. He smiled that sweet dimpled-smile that I adored, that I still adore, yet it became my most haunting memory. He smiled, and with his last breath, muttered the words that would torment me for as long as I live. I can still see his precious, crescent-lidded eye smile and his sweet melodic voice echoes when he calls out my name. Though incoherently, I could still decipher the whisper he uttered that very day when I committed the heinous deed. "I knew what you had to do...but I still love you."
