"Are you excited?" You asked your four-year-old son, Joey, as you watched him color with the crayons the waiter gave him as you anxiously wait for Jennie to show before you order.
He turned his head to look at you, sending you that gummy smile you adore as he nodded excitedly.
You've waited for this day from the day you told Jennie about Joey, which was pretty early on in your relationship.
You started early, wanting to make sure she knew you're a mother first and foremost before you started to get serious.
Because that's the biggest part of your life and no matter how much you like someone, if they're not into the idea of you being a mom, you'll break things off with them in a heartbeat.
It's happened a handful of times over the years.
You've gone out with a few people that have asked you out but they were all iffy about you being a mom and getting involved with someone who either couldn't devote as much time to them as they wanted or they couldn't handle the idea of becoming a possible step-parent.
But Jennie...
Jennie was different.
She reacted so differently from the moment you told her.
Her eyes lit up and she loved hearing you go on and on about your son and all the things he loves. The photos you showed her melted her heart. She told you that he's practically the spitting image of you.
That was about six months ago. You're serious now, realizing that this could be a lifelong relationship. You're both on the same page there and you felt like it's time for them to meet, now that you truly know she's here to stay.
You've told Joey all about her. Since he never knew about his father, since he was out the door before the words about him becoming a dad escaped your lips fully, he loved the idea of having someone else around.
Although he's young, he's bright and friendly, so you know he's bound to get along with her well.
The sound of bells jingling on the restaurant door as someone entered made you lift your head. You smiled from ear to ear when your eyes locked with Jennie's.
She walked to you and you got out of the booth to greet her with a hug and a kiss.
Joey watched with curiosity in his eyes.
"Jennie, this is my son, Joey." You said as he got out of the booth.
"So you're the little dude that I hear so much about!" She said excitedly, kneeling to his height.
She held her hand out for him to shake but he gave her a quick hug instead, causing her heart to flutter in happiness.
"It's so nice to meet you." She smiled and sat at the booth across from the two of you.
"I like the picture you colored!" She complimented and watched him smile.
He slid it across the table, giving it to her.
"Your mom has told me so much about you. I feel like I already know you. But she didn't tell me what an amazing artist you are."
She was trying to hand out compliments, doing anything to make him smile and try to bond with him a little.
Because this is extremely important to her too. She wants to know him, knowing that he's so important to you.
"Thank you!"
She nodded and turned to look at you. She put her hand on yours and sent you the brightest smile.
"I think he likes you." You said.
"Good. I like him too."
That made you so happy.
It felt like this is what you've been waiting for. As though all those people who up and left once finding out about Joey led you to Jennie, who you feel you're meant to belong with.
The waiter came around and Joey ordered his favorite food before returning to coloring more as you and Jennie ordered.
You sat back and watched them interact.
Since you told them all about each other, Jennie was quick to bring up his favorite things, like his favorite cartoons and songs he likes.
And Joey was quick to ask if he could visit her at the studio or practice someday, because you told him Jennie loves music, and her eyes lit up.
"Of course! I'd be so happy if you did."
He smiled and continued to talk as he ate, asking if she liked his favorite cartoons and if she likes the park.
"Are you kidding? I love them!" She grinned.
He giggled and finished his food as Jennie took interest in all of his favorite things.
"Do you like ice cream?" Jennie asked as she paid the bill.
"Yeah!" He said excitedly.
"Well, how about we go out for ice cream and to the park?"
He gasped excitedly and looked at you, hoping you'd say yes.
And how could you not?
"He's going to be your new best friend." You smiled as she took your left hand while Joey took your right one.
"Yeah? I sure hope so. I like him already, he's just like you."
You saw the sparkle in her eyes and you just melted, feeling like you were finally where you were meant to be in life.
The two most important people to you are getting along so well, bonding together right away.
And you're sure you've never been happier in all of your life.
