Pale beams of moonlight illuminated Arcana's figure as she surveyed the overgrown surroundings. Kaiden pulled his slate-grey mask on and glanced at the fissure in the ground, only black void to be seen from above, yet an entire civilisation built below. Crouching down to peer closer into its depths, he tipped his head to look at her.
"Going down now?"
Arcana dipped her head dutifully, and reached into her jacket pocket, retrieving a single silver coin that shimmered in the glow of the scattered stars above. She held it delicately in her palm for a moment, and then tossed it into the fissure.
"Righto, you know the drill. They did change a bit while you were away. So you might wanna... y'know... run."
The silver-eyed girl had turned away from the ravine already and was dashing away from the fissure towards the van.
The coin had lodged itself somewhere in between darkness and open air, where it glinted smugly at Kaiden for a moment more. He scrambled to his feet, and ran for the van as fast as he could carry himself.
Catching up to Arcana, he leaned against the van, taking deep breaths to calm himself, as a hidden mechanism was triggered in the stone. They watched as the ravine exploded.
The coin was blown out in a cloud of dust, rocks and dirt. Arcana squeezed her eyes shut and held her breath until the dust settled.
Kaiden heaved a sigh, wiping dust from his face. His partner folded her arms. "Well serves you right for leaving us for so long."
She made her way over to the ravine, which had been partially cleared out to reveal a set of stone-carved stairs that led so deep that darkness engulfed them before they could see the bottom. "We've made sooooo many adjustments while you were gone. How does it feel to be the new guy again, Kai-kai?"
"Terrible," he grumbled, but followed her down, their footsteps echoing down to whatever laid below, and no doubt alerting other members of their presence.
A/N- Still a WIP! Thought that I'd post what's up so far.
