It's lunch. I was walking in line and was talking to Rachel.
"He totally likes you Ray." I laughed.
"Nah, why would he like someone like me?" She grabs her plastic foam tray.
"So many reasons." I replied. She just shrugged and laughed. I grabbed an Orange Fanta and set it down on the counter. I told the lunch lady I wanted a green apple and she shook her head and said their out, and asked if I wanted some chips or something.
"No, no that's alright." I smiled and walked to the other lunch lady and punched in my lunch number.
"That will be 1.10." She said blankly.
I opened my wallet and gave her two dollars.
"Keep the change." I insisted.
"Thanks." She put the money into the cash register and crossed her legs.
Ray and I walked out and she grabbed a fork and napkin, and I just went right to a table. Totally empty. Everywhere else there were full tables of people laughing and talking and eating with their friends. There was this piece of paper taped onto the table top. 'NOTICE: THIS TABLE IS RESERVED FOR KINDERGARDEN READINESS.'
Rachel sat down and started eating her pears. The sun from the big windows looking out to the locked outdoor food court was hitting her face perfectly. Making her hair shine and her eyes glisten. She is beautiful. Long light brown hair, green eyes, perfect build, flawless features. Just everything about her seemed perfect to me and I don't see why some people don't see it. When we were little, around 7, I used to wish we were sisters, so we could always be with each other and always play Poly Pockets together.
But now, we are sisters. We are always with each other, and when we're not, we're finding some way to talk to each other.
"Hey idiots, didn't you see the sign?" Lela pointed.
"Most definitely, but the kids aren't here yet, so.. I think we're fine." Rachel looked at me as I talked, with a piece of lettuce hanging out of her mouth.
"Well you two slobs should really move so the little kids can sit down, rather than them sitting on the gross floor, where you belong." Lela smirked, thinking her insult really got to us.
"Listen here, okay, stop insulting Callie and I, you aren't making anyone feel bad but yourself, because you're just going to regret everything you've said. " Rachel spoke with anger, but she stayed calm.
"What 'cha gonna do if I don't?" Lela put her hand on her hip and laughs.
Rachel snapped.
She stood up and grabbed Lela's arm, and held it behind her back.
Classic Ray. Lela looked like she was about to cry and she was yelling at Rachel to stop, I stood up and told Rachel to be softer and she she just shook her head.
"She's being a bitch, I already warned her nicely and she didn't listen, mess with the bull and you get the fucking horns."
This was unusual for Rachel to swear, or hurt anyone for that matter. She's always a really sweet girl, doesn't really mess with anyone until they mess with her.
I never see her like this because people usually leave her alone.
"Stop! Stop it now!" Lela was so loud everyone in the cafeteria looked, and started laughing.
I looked over at Isaac who was coming our way. I gave him a smile and he just looked at me, fear and anger in his eyes.
He proceeded to walk over to us, then took Rachel off Lela, who now had a bloody nose.
"What's going on?" He looked at us.
"Rachel just attacked me out of no where!" Lela lied.
"She wouldn't do that," Isaac was right, she wouldn't. "Callie what happened?" His face softened when he looked at me, currently in shock.
"Lela was being mean so Rachel decided she should get what was coming to her." I looked at him. He nodded.
"Well come on, I'll take you to the nurse and then all of us can go to the office." Isaac was on the Student Body, so he, like 8 others, was in charge of the student's behavior at school.
I clung onto his arm and grabbed Rachel's hand, bringing her with us.
Rachel spoke calmly, "Cal, I'm sorry, she was just being so rude and I-"
I cut her off, "Ray it's okay, you did the right thing, she didn't wanna listen." I shrugged.
"What happened?" Nurse Alice asked, grabbing Lela and bringing her into the office, and slammed the door on Isaac, Rachel and I.
"Well, alright." Isaac said, bringing us into the office.
"Can I help you?" The principal asked, putting away a notebook. Isaac stepped forward.
"Yeah, actually. These girls were being harassed by Lela McCarren and Rachel," he pointed to her, "used physical force against her."
The principal raised her eyebrows and looked at Rachel, who had blood all over her shirt from Lela's nose.
"Well, can you all sit down?" She stands up and grabs her notebook again, and a red pen. Isaac sat down at the chair closest to the door, and Rachel sat by the wall, leaving me to sit in two different slots, and I chose the window seat.
I could see the majority of the parking lot, and I shut everyone out, keeping my eyes locked on a grey mini-van driving away.
I started counting the cars by color, thirty-two black, four green, eight red, one yellow and sixteen blue. I was going to finish counting from the other side until I got my thinking cut off.
"Callie please talk to me." The principal said, annoyed.
"Sorry, what?" I looked at her, patiently awaiting her word.
"Right, now can you tell me what you saw or heard?" She clicked her pen against the table.
"Well, me and Rachel were sitting at the table for the younger kids, but they weren't there yet so we stayed, and Lela came over to us and started calling us names and being rude, so Ray told her to stop nicely, and she said 'what if I don't?' and Ray got mad and held her hand behind her back and yelled at her and stuff and Ray punched her." I told her everything.
"Why do you think Ray punched her?" She asks. I looked at Rachel and I told her exactly why.
"Lela has been harassing me a lot lately because.." I stopped talking.
"What? Because of what?" The principal asked.
"She.. She wants to take Isaac away from me." I looked at my hands.
