Chapter 29

Lucinda Borthwick POV:

"Who is Lewis?" I questioned sincerely not knowing whom she was talking about. Cedric readily came and stood of me, curtaining me from the lady. The lady started walking towards me slowly and I was still behind Cedric.

Lewis? I never knew someone with that name. Saving Lewis? What is she talking about? Or is it the boy from.... I was cut from my train of thoughts "The little boy you saved yesterday" she said. What? The boy is well and in good health?

I came from behind Cedric and moved towards her. "He is healthy?" I questioned and the lady nodded wiping her tears. "Step away from her mistress" Cedric said when the lady started coming towards me.

"Please save my husband. Please I beg you" The lady said sobbing and dear heavens it was very sad looking at her cry. "You should not have come here. Go away" Cedric spoke. What? Why should she not come here?

"Please save my husband. He is all I have. Pl- Please mistress" the lady cried. I want to help her, it was very sad for one to loose anyone close to them. "Show yourself out of this place. I will not say again" Cedric shouted at the already crying lady.

"I will forever serve you if you save my husband" the lady cried and Cedric went towards her in rage and started dragging her away. The lady was now on the floor not wanting to get away without getting the cure for her husband.

She seemed so helpless and wanting to do anything she could to save her husband. "Ce-Cedric" I spoke but, it came out as a whisper. He was unable to listen to me speak and continued dragging the women away.

"Cedric" this time I spoke in a loud voice and he stopped. "Her husband is ill and I will help her" I said without thinking of the consequences. "Master instructed me to keep you home safe mistress" and once he spoke those words I remembered Merchant Rolfe asking me not to leave the house. He asked me not to leave the house so, how can I go out and save her husband?

I paused thinking on how to save her husband and Cedric continued dragging her away. I looked at the lady being dragged away, the sorrow in her eyes showed how desperate she was. "Please... Please save him" the lady chanted-cried but, Cedric payed no ear.

People are dying and if I could help them regain their health then I should help them right? Was I not suppose to go out because my husband ordered me not to? Yes I should do what I was asked to and not leave the house. But, what about her husband? He is dying she says, just like the child from yesterday.

"Please....." the lady shouted-cried and I knew I had to go and look at her husband. "Cedric....stop" I said and he left the hold on her hand and turned to face me. "I will go help her" I said and I do not know what punishment will be given to me by Cedric or Merchant Rolfe. I decided to help her and so I will.

"Mistress, Master will not be happy to know that you went out despite him ordering you not to" Cedric reasoned and I knew I will be punished and I already got habituated to take whippings or any other punishment.

"Sh-She needs help" I said desperately wanting to help her. "Mistress, you already went out yesterday and Master still does not know of it and now you want to go out again? There is plague out there mistress" Cedric said and I knew the punishment would be severe.

"Bu-But he-her husband is ill" I said and the cries of the lady could be heard more clearly. "I will go and help her" I said looking at the poor lady. Her eyes were red and swollen and her clothing is all dirty because of the dragging.

"I can not allow you to go out mistress, Master ordered me not to" he said and I did not know what to say. If I am not allowed out of the house then am I still a prisoner like how I was before? I started comparing my life here to my life at Borthwick manor.

Cedric continued dragging the lady and I knew I was helpless, as helpless as her. 'No you are not' a voice spoke. Yes I am helpless, Cedric will not allow me to get out. I will be punished if I try to get out. 'No, you can help her, Speak out' the voice said. I can not, I can not.

My whole world was now filled with the pleads and the voice. 'Please...Please', 'You can, YOU CAN', 'Please...Please', 'You can, YOU CAN', 'Please...Please', 'You can, YOU CAN' it continued.

The cries of the lady and the words of an unknown voice filled my ears and so, I spoke, spoke out loud. "I will help her and you will not stop me Cedric"

"Masters orders will be carried out mistress" Cedric said and I spoke out again. "I am the Mistress of this house and you are to listen to me when your master is not around. I will go and help her" I said and started walking towards the house to get the herbs for her husband.

Before entering the house, I looked at Cedric and saw him still holding the lady. "Leave her now" I ordered and rushed into the house. I do not have many herbs left and so, I took the whole with me.

I went to the lady and she saw her still crying. I helped her stand up and asked her to lead the way and Cedric followed us. We went into the house and I looked at the condition her husband is in. He is not moving, looked very pale and his eyes were closed but, I know that he is still breathing.

I asked her where I could prepare the decoction and she showed me the way. I prepared the decoction and asked her to give it to her husband. I grinded few other herbs and applied the spread on to his palms and soles of his feet.

"I do not know if this could save him but, this is all I could do" I said and started leaving. I turned back when heard a "Thank you". The lady was still crying but these tears felt something else... tears of gratitude?

I went out of the hut and saw Cedric standing and waiting patiently. He still was not looking at me in the eye but he knew that I came out. We were going back to the house when I got stopped by a voice.

"Thank you" the voice said and I turned back and it was Lewis's mother. I saw her walk towards me and stand at some distance away from me. "Thank you... thank you" the said while crying and I just nodded.

"Is-is he healthy?" I questioned and she nodded with tears still freely flowing. "He opened his eyes and looked at me. *cries* I thought he died but, he opened his eyes. His body doe not feel hot anymore but he is still in bed" the Lady spoke.

"Make him healthy stew and feed him and prepare decoction of this and feed him" saying that, I handed her the remaining herbs I had with me and left with Cedric.

We returned and I got back into the house, I knew I did something very bad by going out of the house and a punishment is awaiting me. I went into the cooking hut and started preparing food for the night. I sat by the hut and the sun sets leaving few traces of gold and yellow in the sky.

I went back into the hut cooking and did not know when Merchant Rolfe entered. "I heard that you were naughty today my little fire?" I heard and dropped the ladle I was holding. I started sweating and knew I would be punished.

I did not dare turn around to look at him and wanted to cry even before I was punished. "I am here My Bride, look at me" he said and I could sense him walking towards me. I knew I would be punished regardless so, it was better to listen to him and do as he says. I turned around and saw him walking towards me and Cedric standing by the entrance of the cooking hut.
