Gunshot wounds are a physical trauma caused when a bullet from a firearm enters your body cavity.

'Twenty-nine-year-old female, Adrianna Bowmen, presents with GSW to the chest. The patient is slightly tachycardic and vital signs include a heart rate of..,' the paramedic continues to provide information about the patient as I roll the gurney into the large hospital trauma room, with the wind violently whipping my hair in various directions.

Gunshot wounds are most often fatal. Damage depends on what path the bullet follows into the body, what part of the body it hits, the accuracy of the gunman and the velocity with which the bullet moves.

I watch her low blood pressure along with the distended veins, and on listening find muffled heart sounds.

After gaining a little more information on her condition, I order an EKG and a chest X-Ray, which confirm my diagnosis of the patient suffering from a pericardial tamponade.

'Prep OR-2 for an emergency thoracotomy ASAP,' I order my scrub nurse, Charlotte Hunt, who immediately responds with a nod; her dark blonde hair bouncing atop her head as she rushes towards the other direction.

I spend the next few seconds changing into my blue scrubs, putting on my cherry scrub cap, and washing my hands. I put a mask over my face and head into the operating room where Charlotte directs my hands into a pair of surgical gloves.

I move to the right side of the patient, as Charlotte stands near the surgical table. Situated on the left of the patient is my personal favorite resident, Stephanie Andrews, who looks around the room eagerly.

I glance at the gallery to find a bunch of interns excitedly staring down at the scene.

Just as I'm about to make an incision, the patient's heart monitor starts beeping.

'The patient must have gone into cariogenic shock!' Stephanie exclaims.

'The patient is in V-Fib,' I state, scanning the heart monitor. 'Charlotte, bring the defibrillation paddles,' I demand while performing chest compressions to stop the patient's arrhythmia.
