“…and so the great Arch-Angel, Lucifer was thrown from the heavens into the depths of Hell―”

BANG.  My arms slid from underneath my chin, making my sleepy head slam onto the wooden desk.

Mr. Wheeler turns to me with a frown upon his face, “Enjoying my lecture Ms. Harbrigger? Or do you know this topic so well that you decided to drift off.  Again.”

I heard a few muffled snickers and I quietly groaned to myself.

“Maybe you could tell us about the significance of Angels or other winged entities throughout world civilizations?”

I didn’t even bother to open my mouth and answer the question. Wheeler was on a roll.

“Or maybe an essay could get your memory jogging. Yes, an essay due by the end of this week. Typed.”

Jerk, I mutter under my breath.

“Pardon?”

“Nothing, Mr. Wheeler.” I said in the most robotic voice I could conjure up from my dead vocal chords. World Religions and Mythology class continued with Mr. Wheeler droning on about the Greeks and Aztecs and something about half-naked goat men…

It seemed like I gained 100 years by the time the bell rang. Once I heard the ringing I bolted out the door. I would be one very fast Grandma…

Once I slammed my locker door I saw Luke’s face pear out from around the corner and he made a beeline towards me. His dark black mop of hair was always in his face. He had his killer smile on as usually. Everyone feared his baby face; even the teachers couldn’t pull off detention on him. Luke has been my friend since middle school and has been my personal side-kick in all the pranks we pulled off since then, including one consisting of maple syrup and a mop. Don’t ask.

“Heard you fell asleep in Wheeler’s class. Again. ” He smirked at me while saying this.

I raised my eyebrow at him.

“Does that surprise you?”

He shrugged and I grinned. I was notorious for sleeping in class. I was labeled with an incurable insomnia when I got into middle school. My mom just thought I was a really cranky baby. It just so happened that my serious case of insomnia went away during the day, so I sleep. I’m not a vampire or anything. I don’t do the whole “I vant to suck you blood” thing.

Luke feigned being hurt, “Oh come on. Give me some credit here.”

I chuckled.

“Why don’t you just attend mass and sleep there?”

St. Agatha’s holds a mass every Sunday of each week. You don’t have to attend the service but if you don’t it is required that you attend a world mythology and religions class.

I glared at Luke.

“I don’t want a repeat of last time”

He started roaring with laughter.

“How could I forget. Father Bryant thought you were praying. He left you there for two whole hours. When you woke up and said, ‘where the hell am I?’ he looked like he had a heart attack!”

I grimaced.

“You do know I’m an atheist.”

“It couldn’t hurt. You sleep like an angel.”

I rolled my eyes as he laughed at his own pun.

Once I got home I heard as series of crashes in the kitchen. Mom was cooking again. Or should I say attempting to cook. When I saw an explosion of flour come out of the door way I yelled.

“Do you want me to order Rigiano’s?” It’s our usual pizza place. Mom calls it our “back-up plan”. We use this back-up plan quite often.

“Yeah. That’s a good idea.”

Oh mom. When will you ever learn that the best way to keep the house in good condition is not to burn it down.

~*~*~*~**~*~*~**~

We ate in silence munching on pepperoni and cheese while mom was flipping through her latest manuscript. She’s a writer, so she stays up ridiculously late to meet a deadline. She practically drives herself into the ground. Did I mention she is a micromanager and a perfectionist? She frowned as she turned each page and her eyebrows furrowed even more. I sighed.

“Do you want me to look at it?”

She looked up a bit surprised.

“nonono its fine really…just some sketchy lines here and there and --”

I glared at her as she smiled weakly.

“I’ll be done by tonight I promise.”

I grab my coat and shouted behind me as I opened the front door.

“Going for a walk. I’ll be back soon.”
