The chilled breeze swirled past them, the sun on the verge of setting, warm tangy oranges fading into a navy blue.
Pillow clouds above blushed pretty pink as the sun edged behind the far horizon.
Paper lanterns tide up with string started to glow with the fading light, like fireflies awakening for their evening dance.
The pair walked slowly, one walking much slower to accommodate for the others height, or rather lack of.
"It's cold tonight, you sure you're wearing enough?" The taller inquired, concerned but playful. He looked down to his fiance, who accompanied a rather large dark green coat, with fur on the hood that stook out in every direction.
"Very funny big man, how come you never get cold?" He chortled back, but actually interested in the answer.
"Im not sure," Ranboo furrowed his eyesbrows, lifting his skinny hands to look at them "Must have good circulation, could be todo with my other half." He smiled, nudging Tubbo with his shoulder.
He replied simply with a laugh, gripping his coat closer and looking off into the middle distance.
"Seriously though Tubbo, you OK? You've been quiet ever since we left snowchester." He said, looking down at him with his eyes but facing straight forward.
"Mhm, guess I'm just concerned about Micheal and the- the loud noises." He did not look back from the sunset.
"You mean the fireworks?"
Tubbo concealed a wince and nodded.
"He'll be fine, Techno will take care of him don't worry, and anyway, he snores louder than any firework could explode." Ranboo chuckled, but the sharp sound of the last word made his companion shiver.
"Yeah I guess, we only just adopted him and he hasn't really been without us and-"
Ranboo turned and grasped the small freezing hands of the caution ram "It will be good for him, piglins are pack creatures, he can benifit from this. If anything goes wrong Techno would contact us straight away, just relax."
Tubbo stared up into his fiancé's mismatched eyes, considering telling the truth.
"You're right" He sighed, not wanting to pull his hands away, genuinely afraid of frostbite.
"Now hurry up, or they'll start the festival without us!" Ranboo tried to walk and pull Tubbo with him, but he was stopped by his surprising strength, being tugged back.
"Tubbo, tell me what's wrong." He moved into a more serious tone, trying to remember if there was anything else.
"It's nothing. Why do we have to celebrate at all, you know? Can't we just celebrate in our own ways, like peacefully at home with a cup of tea or something. Sat by the fire with our secure family?" He now avoided the eye contact, worried that he might spill the truth just though his expression.
"Dream is finally in prison, he's been the bane of this land for the longest time, way before I found this place, you've experienced it first hand, everyone just wants to celebrate together. Plus, I've never seen fireworks properly before. We can still celebrate at home after if you want.."
The smaller let go of his hands reluctantly, turning away and kicking the ever so interesting rocks.
"Yeah, but Philza isn't, I don't get why we have to be so showy about it. A simple get together would be fine, mulled wine and cake?" He shifted his weight back and forth, feeling his own pressure lay down on him.
The split enderman sighed, looking out to where the sun once was, the bright stars taking her place.
"We can go home if you want, I can see fireworks another time" A warm but bittersweet smile fell over his face, he did want to see the lights so badly, but he would do anything for this man, especially if he didn't feel comfortable.
"No no it's okay, I know how much it means to you and boy am I glad Dream is gone but- its okay its fine forget I said anything, come on." Tubbo walked ahead, the enderman catching up easily with a few steps.
"Tubbo if there's something wrong you can tell me" He reached, grabbing his shoulder softly.
The pair stopped walking.
The goat boy breathed in deeply, before turning slowly, making direct eye contact.
As he bagan to talk, Ranboo observed his face, realising how stupid his was.
"It's not that- I just- Ever since-" He huffed at his stutter, but thankfully Ranboo picked up where he left off.
"Ever since manburg, isn't it? It's not Micheal whose the one afraid of the fireworks, it's you." He smiled, placing his hands gently on both of Tubbos shoulders, feeling them rise and fall slowly, he matched his breathing.
"I'm not afraid-"
"It's okay Tubbo, I understand, we don't have to go." Ranboos words spread warmth in his heart, feeling true peace for the first time since before he moved here, long long ago.
"Thank you, but, I still want to go." Tubbos hands shifted to Ranboos, which were now holding his icey cheeks.
"Are you sure?"
Taking a last breath in, to check with himself, and out, he replied certainly "Yes."
A large toothy smile rose up the endermens jolly face, bewildered by his fiancé's will.
"Then come on, were gonna miss it."
Tubbo couldn't help but giggle as Ranboo skipped ahead of him, pulling him along, almost making him trip.
Like glitter, the stars watched down, waiting for the show to began.
The pair made it to the festival, grabbing hot drinks from Fundys van and finding a spot high on a hill.
The others were spread around, all waiting for the same thing. Some cuddling, some holding hands, some alone. Tubbo almost felt bad, how much joy the imprisonment of just another guy brought to the people, but the memories of what he had done came back to remind him, it was for the best.
To think he almost died, he wouldn't be here right now. He wouldn't be beside his future husband, cuddling up to his side from the cold, feeling safer than ever. A son at home, waiting, having fun with his uncle. Tommy free, crazy as ever, fidgeting impatiently down by the dispensers.
The 16 year old swung up a megaphone, one that he and Tubbos used to mess around with when they were kids.
He switched it on, a loud ringing deafening everyone there.
"Uh Hello? Welcome everyone! How are we? Are you ready for some crazy fucking shit tonight!?"
A half murmer escaped from the thin croud.
"Boys boys boys boys, come on! My best friend almsot died for good last week, is that anyway to act!?"
A louder cheer finally came from the citizens while Tommy smiled up at Tubbo, who in return chuckled at his enthusiasm.
"Sorry if this all goes to shit, I did ask Sam to be here tonight to help with redstone, but he was too busy making sure the worst man in the world is safely locked up! Can I get an AYUP!?" He beamed, lifting his hand to his ear.
He got a single "ayup" in response.
"ugh shut the fuck up Jack Manifold, nobody cares. Anyway, let the light show begin!"
Everything became slow motion as Tommy's arm waved down, signaling for the lever as a gunner might as he orders the next traitors execution.
Sparks flew from the ground, one after another.
Seconds took eons as Tubbo turned away, scrunching his eyes closed. Ranboo turned back to him, covering his ears with his much larger hands.
The enderian looked down at him and smiled simply, before looking up to the sky.
Colours danced in his eyes, literal bursts of rainbows and shooting stars rocketing up with a hiss.
It was like nothing he'd ever seen, it looked the same way he felt when he watched his family together.
As beautiful as it was, he could miss this for Tubbo, who he looked back down at.
Cautiously, he opened and eye, looking up at his fiancé's stunned
face that flashed with reds, greens and blues.
His hands were surprisingly sound proof, but Tubbo slid his hands over them anway for that added protection.
Looking closer, he could see them. The could see the fireworks, in the reflection of Ranboos eyes. They weren't so bad there, he could watch them all night. He knew he was safe when he looked in his eyes, so seeing the scary lights weren't such a problem anymore.
The tightness of his scar faded away as he sank from reality, time stopping for them, and only them.
He had been so accepting of his fate in Dreams bunker, but now he wouldn't miss this for the world. He thought about what he had said that night "All good things must come to an end" But tonight was endless, the moment lasting eternity and the memory staying infinitely longer.
He was meant to be here, this was his home, and he was safe.
