The thing is, I had just died. I was strangled to death by an obsessive boyfriend. I had just graduated the year before and we had been together for three years at that point. As I had struggled to breathe eventually my vision faded.
All of a sudden I felt my breath come back to me, with a gasp I quickly got up only to find myself on an unfamiliar bed in an unfamiliar place. Glancing around frantically I see that the bedroom door is closed, running to it I turn the handle only for it to open easily. Slowly I walk through the hallway of the home until I find the front door. Taking a deep breath I open it and slip out.
While I'm running down the road I begin making random turns before I start running through the woods without any shoes on. As I'm rushing past the dirt road when I hear a loud honk and then see a flash of lights before I'm suddenly feeling a sharp pain in my side.
Fuck, I am pretty sure that I got ran over. I definitely feel like I had the wind knocked out of me. Sure, only I would somehow not die from being strangled to death and then end up dying a short few hours later via car.
"Lydia?" I hear a male voice say loudly, sounding worried and a bit hysterical, then I hear feet running towards me quickly.
I do wonder however, who is Lydia?
"Lydia Martin." Another male voice says loudly, this one sounds older. "Are you alright? What the hell were you doing running around that like that? Stiles, get back in the car - now."
I blink and shake my head, still seeing the headlights brightly. The two guys in front of me seemed like makeshift shapes. I can feel the ground below me. "Ugh." I grumble out.
"Do I need to call an ambulance or can you walk it off?" I hear the male ask worriedly. "Are you hurt? Can you stand Lydia?"
My vision was blurry as I try to see him clearer, which is also difficult when it's so dark out. I rasp out. "Whose Lydia?"
He curses, but I can't exactly understand what he's saying at the moment. "You are Lydia. Damn. What happened to you kid?"
At that point I was in and out of consciousness, out of tiredness or perhaps because I was hit. Honestly, it could have been either of those things. It didn't matter though, my body just felt exhausted.
"We need an ambulance out here."
"I know, can you also call Natalie Martin. Let her know that her daughter is going to be on the way to the hospital."
When I came to again I was laying in a hospital bed with some woman holding my hand tenderly. I blink at her for awhile, unsure of exactly what's going on.
"Do you recognize me?" She asks me apprehensively when she notices that I'm awake.
I shake my head slowly as I mutter quietly. "Vaguely. I just don't know how."
Her face saddens. "I'm your mother. Do you remember your name?"
I open my mouth to answer and then close it, trying to remember that detail about my life at least. Again, I shake my head. I think my name is Anna — or was it Lisa? I can't remember.
"Your name is Lydia. Lydia Martin." She tells me carefully as I feel myself frown. "It's midnight on Monday morning and you have school today. Or you were supposed to."
"I don't —" I begin to say when she shakes her head and glances around us. She puts her finger to her lips and I remain silent.
"Just get some rest okay? In the morning if you're feeling well we'll get you discharged and I will take you home. Then you will need to tell me what happened."
