Kal's POV
Suddenly, I heard a scream, followed by a grunt and a thud. I got off my bike to try to find where it came from. Whoever it was, they sounded hurt.
Dru decided to finally catch up with me. He got off his bike as well and came to my side.
"What're you doing?" He asked breathlessly. "We're supposed to be home-"
"Did you hear that?" I interrupted, scanning the street.
"Hear what?"
"Someone screamed. Like they got hurt."
Dru sighed. "It was probably just some kids messing around. Come on, let's go back."
I wasn't listening. I spotted an abandoned house across the street. It looked like somewhere a person would hide.
We heard the rush of an engine and spun around to see a large black van speeding past us. They paused at the end of the street, and turned right.
"I wonder what they're looking for," Dru mused.
I turned towards the empty house and headed for the gate. "C'mon."
Dru sighed again but reluctantly followed.
The gate creaked as I opened it. We looked around the yard. An abandoned kid's wagon, a dusty porch, and an untended garden were in our view. I could sense someone else.
I heard a gasp and spun around to see a girl, hiding behind the tree in the corner of the yard, clutching her arm.
"Who are you?" I asked, stepping closer. "I heard you scream, are you all right?"
The girl only shook her head no and backed away towards the corner fence from us.
"S-Stay away from me." She muttered.
Dru stepped closer. I saw something drip from her arm she was clutching. So did Dru.
"Is that-Is that blood?" He asked incredulously.
She glanced at her arm. "Yep," She said, sounding more annoyed than in pain.
I walked towards her, Dru on my tail. The girl started to tense up a bit. I couldn't blame her.
She was wearing a white uniform with an orange badge. Her hair was a long and dark, but a tangled mess with leaves and twigs. Her face was covered with dirt and grime. She was obviously Indian, like my brother and I, but with very light tan skin, unlike our dark chocolate brown.
That's the thing about Indians. Our skin colors vary from the lightest white to the darkest shade of brown. But we're still all Indians.
The girl looked like she had been through a lot. I remembered the black van we saw earlier.
"Wait a second, we saw a black van earlier, were you running from that?"
Her hazel brown eyes widened, and I knew that she was running from them.
"I'm Dru." Dru said to her. "This is my twin brother Kal."
"I noticed," She muttered. I suppose we are identical, besides Dru having glasses.
"Why don't you tell us who you are," I suggested. "Maybe we can help."
She glared at me, looked down at her bleeding arm, and must've decided that she was in no position to say no.
"I'm Priya," She said, looking at the ground. She looked up at me with a gleam in her eye.
"You're right. I was running from the van. I escaped from them and ran all the way here, and climbed the tree to hide." She explained, gesturing to the huge tree in the corner of the fence.
"I climbed as high as I could. Of course, that was a bad idea. I lost my balance, and fell out and tried to grab onto another branch to hang on, but it wasn't strong enough to hold my weight and snapped. On the way down I got this scratch."
Priya rolled up her left sleeve up to her upper arm. Dru rushed forward to inspect it. The cut reached almost to her elbow. It didn't look that deep, but still enough to hurt and get infected.
"That looks bad," Dru told her. "We need to get you to a hospital."
At this Priya yanked her arm back and drew away from us frantically. "No, no, no. I'm not going to any hospitals, or doctors, or adults." She picked up a black stuffed backpack I hadn't noticed before from the base of the tree and shouldered it.
"Why not?" I demanded. "What are you running from?"
Her brow furrowed, and she sighed. "Tell me, was there a dentist check up at your school today?"
"Uhh..yes," Dru said, looking confused. "How do you know about that?"
Priya gave no sign of hearing his question. Her eyes widened and she moved towards the gate of the house. "You need. To. Stay. Away. From. Me." She said slowly and cautiously. "They're tracking you right now!"
"Wait, hang on!" Dru said. "I didn't go to the check up."
"Why? And what about him?" She nodded to me.
"I...Uh..don't really like dentists, so Kal went in for me twice." He explained, looking away from her.
I wanted to laugh. I suppose 'I don't really like dentists' was one way to explain his fear.
Priya narrowed her eyes. "So you're saying Kal has 2 implants, while you have none? But that would mean he'd be twice as strong as everyone else..."
"Twice as strong?" I asked.
"Implants?" Dru questioned.
"We can't talk about this here," the girl said, looking around nervously. "Do you know if there's anywhere safe where we can talk in private?"
"Uh...We could always go to our house?" I suggested, scratching the back of my head.
I really hoped this wasn't a bad idea.
