“Jack,” Jonathan called.

“Hey, what’s going on?” I asked.

“How do you think today went with Violet?” Jonathan asked.

“I think it went pretty well. Your plan was genius though. Having me ask her to join us so we could use her to get the cure and weaponize it again, I see a lot of Vlad in you,” I said.

“Thank you for such a compliment, but no one can replace Vlad,” Jonathan said with a pause.

I knew that Vlad’s death had been hardest on Jonathan because he was the co-founder of the Hunters. Technically Jonathan should be the leader, but after Vlad died everyone was so distraught that the Hunters were falling apart until I gave an inspiring speech. That’s how I got the position, but honestly I couldn’t be doing this without Jonathan advising me.

“How long should we wait to ask her about if she can get the cure?” I asked.

“You told her she was to be tested right? If so, then that can be her first test, to get samples of the cure and bring it back to us, and then once we have what we want we can torture her for killing Vlad,” Jonathan said with fire in his eyes.

“Torture her? What do you mean, we are just using her and then letting her go,” I said.

“Look, we are killers of justice. We take out any threat to our mission, and Violet will be a threat once she figures out she’s being used. She will leave and exact her revenge on us. Trust me, Vlad has told me a lot about Violet. Plus, since Violet and I fought today and she still defeats me, I want to show her that she is not unstoppable,” Jonathan said with vengeance filling his voice.

“I will not allow for that, Vlad murdered Violet’s parents, it’s only natural that Violet would want to avenge her parents,” I said.

“You’re defending her? She killed Vlad, the person who had a vision. And as you said in that speech, its up to us to keep Vlad’s dream alive, to kill vampires and purify the world of such evil,” Jonathan barked at me as he shook his head in disgust at me.

I stood in my room feeling like I’d been used. If I knew Jonathan’s hatred for Violet went so far, I would have never let Violet come. Hunters who loved Vlad surround Violet; some witnessed Violet’s betrayal of Vlad and have not forgotten. Most Hunters here are not happy that I’ve brought her back, but I assured them that it would be a good thing.  I should have known Jonathan would have pulled something like this; it’s something Vlad would have done.

Violet should be safe though, I assigned Spike to be her bodyguard. I knew that Violet could take care of herself, but I was worried of an outbreak, and wasn’t sure if Violet would be able to take on all the Hunters. Spike wasn’t thrilled about doing the job, but I knew he secretly had a thing for her when she was with us. Spike has always had issues with liking girls who were, well…like Violet.

The thing that Spike feared was that the Hunters would hate him for protecting a traitor. I assured him that everyone knew that I gave him that job, but Spike still resented me for it. I just hoped that Violet made it out of here alive.

The next day everyone was getting up and heading to the breakfast hall. I walked in and saw Jonathan sitting with all of Vlad’s friends. They probably all planned this together. I grabbed my breakfast and sat down with Jonathan and the rest of Vlad’s friends.

“Jack, you understand why we want to do this right?” Robert asked.

“Yes, I understand why, but Violet is only eighteen. She has been through so much already,” I pointed out.

“Are you making excuses for her? She killed Vlad. Vlad is dead because of her!” Robert snapped.

I took a deep breath and was going to respond but noticed Violet walk in with Spike tailing her, watching everyone with hawk eyes. I could see that Violet was annoyed with Spike. Everyone in the breakfast hall was giving her secret glares as she walked past them. On the outside she seemed completely confident, but having that many people hate you in a room sure would make me insecure.

“Everyone hates her,” Jonathan said stating the obvious.

“Yeah I can see that, but if my uncle raised me on a lie and I figured out he murdered my parents I would definitely have some anger towards him,” I said.

“Violet’s parents were raising Violet to believe that vampires were not creatures of evil. Vlad had to stop that,” Robert said taking a bite of food.

“I understand that Vlad had his ideas of what was right and wrong, but he was not Violet’s parents. They were raising her the way they believed was correct,” I defended.

“But there way was wrong. What would have happened if Violet ran into a dangerous vampire and she thought they were friendly like the one that her parents liked? Violet would have been killed instantly. At least she is a fighter right?” Jonathan pointed out.

“I’m done,” I said getting up not wanting to hear more what-ifs.

“Aren’t you glad we’re using her? I mean, I know I would love to kill vampires, but this cure weapon will just cure vampirism…so that means no more actual killing of them,” Robert said before I left.
