"Ah, this is the life, me, my cat, and the hundreds of guards surrounding this inescapable and suffocating place." The blond boy looks back at me with a smirk, and I can't help but let out a small chuckle.
"My Prince, are you implying that you do not enjoy my company?" I playfully glance to the side, where he's sitting on a bench in the gazebo of the vast garden. He laughs at my inquiry; the afternoon sun shines on him, making him look like an angel.
Well, he always looks like one, besides the times when he'll tease me to no end.
"Of course, I don't mean you (Y/N); honestly, if you weren't here, I feel like this really would be hell." Hearing him say that fills me with joy and pride, knowing that someone like him likes spending time around me. Though I can't voice how much it means to hear him say so, I wouldn't want to upset My Prince or make him uncomfortable, leading to him getting a new personal knight.
So instead, I try to be professional with my flattery, disguised behind my respect for him. "I'm honored you think so, My Prince, but I must insist, surely living here is better than outside the walls, is it not? You have mentioned that your dislike towards living here, but..." I try not to seem too overbearing; his distress does concern me, though.
Letting out a sigh, he looks back to where the fountain is; he's quiet for a bit, lost in thought; I begin to wonder if I overstepped. I try to apologize, but before I can, he speaks. "I know I may sound like some spoiled brat, wanting a different life than this one; here, where I can have everything I could ever desire; except my freedom. If I could do things on my own volition, I wouldn't mind not having this extravagant lifestyle."
Turning to me once more, he smiles and pats down the seat next to him; I hesitate but take it regardless. I look around, becoming fidgety; I had never been this close to My Prince before; I pray no one comes to see us like this.
"It'll be fine, just for right now; I want to feel like I'm actually talking to a friend." The way he looks at me is soft, almost in an endearing way, yet anxious, as if he's afraid to be vulnerable.
Friend? There are indeed no other kids his age in the castle. At least to where he is allowed to go. But to consider me a friend? Someone who was assigned to him?
"We're friends, are we not (Y/N)?" He looks directly into my eyes with his beautiful shining ones, and I feel my heart swell. Here he was looking at me, not as the Prince who rules over me and so many others, but as someone whom he sees as an equal.
"Of course, My Prince, although I have pledged my allegiance to you, I also feel as though we have grown close." He smiles at that and continues looking at the flowing fountain; although his skin glows, he has a melancholic expression.
"My Prince, what would you do if you could go outside these walls?" I want to hear more about him, more about what he likes or doesn't, everything. Knowing that he thinks of me as a friend gives me hope that we could grow closer despite the status difference.
He looks taken aback but seems to think my question thoroughly. "Well, I'm not really sure how everything works, but I'd like to make a lot of friends and have parties or maybe just a simple picnic in the plains. Eating lunch at a huge table by myself gets a little lonely after a while."
He lets out a dry laugh and looks down to Plagg, a cheeky stay cat that managed to sneak its way into the castle and stay hidden, thanks to My Prince. "That all sounds really boring, huh?"
I shake my head quickly, "No, not at all. I'm sure everyone wants friends with whom they can spend their time. And a picnic in the plains, where you can see the kingdom form, that really does sound great. You know, I went there a couple of times with my family before I began training to be a knight. Granted, it was still quite extravagant but eating outdoors is quite amazing."
