After the feast, which had appeared magically, and dumbledores speech, the huffelpuff prefects took the first years to the huffelpuff common room, more commonly known as the huffelpuff basement.
The entrance was located in the same corridor as the kitchens. To get in you had to tap a barrel to the rhythm to helga huffelpuff. If you get it wrong barrel or the wrong rhythm, you would be soaked in vinegar.
The inside was circular with round windows, couches and armchairs, all of which were covered in black and yellow. The window frames with decorated with an assortment of plants, some of which were dancing.
Along the walls were circular doors which, Cedric explained, lead to the dorms.
We went to our dorms to find our trunks had already been moved to the rooms. I jump onto a bed by the window and look around the yellow and black room.
Four four-poster beds line the walls of the circular room, each with a patchwork blanket. I look out my window at the black lake. The moonlight is reflecting off the water, illuminating the ground around it.
The rest of the people in my dorm come in. There is Georgie Walker, a tall blond girl, Taylor Thompson, a small girl with short brown hair and Emma Banner, an average girl with dark brown hair.
I don't take much of a liking to my room mates, then again, I don't take much of a liking to most people.
I unpack my stuff and get ready for tomorrow, the day I start classes.
***
I wake up before everyone else and head downstairs to the common room. It's empty except for Cedric.
"Anything I should know before I start classes today?" I ask as I sit down opposite him.
"Not much, just don't piss off the teachers and you should be fine. Watch out for Snape though, you don't want to get on his bad side."
"Ok." I reply. "When's brekkie?"
Cedric raises an eyebrow. "You're wondering about food? Shouldn't you be all nervous for your first day?"
"Nah. Don't get nervous easily. And food is delicious."
Cedric laughs. "Breakfast will start in about 10 minutes. We should probably head off now."
I nod in response and we walk out of the common room.
We reach the great hall in 10 mins, chatting as we go.
We sit down at the hufflepuff table with the other people who have come down for breakfast early.
"So what year are you in?" I ask.
"Fifth. I'm also captain and seeker of the quidditch team."
"Quidditch?" I ask. I had never heard of what I think to be a sport. Although, I'm not a sporty person.
"Quidditch is the sport wizards play. Every house has a team..." Cedric went into a full explanation of the game. It sounded pretty fun but im not very competitive.
"I can teach you to play if you want." Cedric finished.
"id love that" I say smiling.
A professor hands me and Cedric a schedule. I have charms, transfiguration, lunch, flying, potions and herboligy.
***
"The spell is wingardium leviosa. And remember, swish and flick." Prof. Flitwit called from his stack of books.
I point my wand towards a feather and say the spell. The feather shakes a bit a lifts slightly.
With a few more practises I can move to feather easily. I look around at the rest of my class to see that no one else has managed to move the feather without even doing the movement.
I flick through my spellbook and decide to try something else. "Lumos." I mutter. The end of my wand glows brightly.
"Nox." I mutter the counter curse and the light goes out.
After flicking through my book some more I find the summoning spell.
"Accio." I say, pointing my wand at my feather. It doesn't work.
"Accio feather." I say and the feather comes flying towards me and stops just in front of me.
The bell rings signalling the end of the period, so I gather my things and leave.
***
I finish my lunch of some sausages and head down to the quidditch pitch for my flying lesson.
When I get down there Madame Hooch is waiting with a small group of first year who came earlier then me.
"Place your right hand over the broom and say up." Madame Hooch says once everyone was standing beside there brooms.
"Up." I say amd the broom soars into my hand. I smile to myself when I look around to see no one else has managed to do it.
"Now mount your brooms and keep your feat firmly on the ground." Madame Hooch said Once everyone had managed to get their brooms up.
Everyone easily got onto there brooms, even with the long robes we were wearing.
"Now lean slightly forward to take off." I lean forward and the broom takes to the air. As my confidence grew, so did my speed.
I loved the feeling of the wind in my hair, the adrenaline and the freedom that came with flying.
All to soon, we were called back to the ground. I lent forward into a steep angle of descent, pulling up not far from the ground.
I jump off my broom and it falls limp beside me. Only when I was on the ground did I realise everyone was starring at me. I shrug it off and pick up my broom and return it to the store room.
***
"You should meet my brother, Liam. You'd get along well." I say to Cedric at dinner.
"If he's anything like you, im sure we would. Are you from Australia? You always use a lot of strange words that I've only heard used there." Cedric says.
"Yeah, i am. I moved to London when I was 8. Liam and I plan to move back there when we are older."
"Why? What's so great about Australia?" Cedric asks
"I love the weather, the people, the quiet, christmas in summer and I miss my family. We used to all get together at Christmas and play backyard cricket and eat roast turkey and just generally have a great time."
"Sounds better then my Christmases. First off it's to cold to go outside and second my family were never close, we never got together for anything." Cedric says. "What's backyard cricket by the way?"
"I'll show you tomorrow." I says, laughing.
