Words by themselves are harmless. Add a tone of voice and they can bring the strongest person to their feet crying. That's why I think verbal abuse is the worst type of abuse...because that's what led me to how I am today.
With six simple words, "YOU'RE AS USELESS AS YOU'RE MOTHER!"
Is all it took for me to become mute.

Todoroki's Pov
I woke up to pain spiking on my shoulder. The night previous to today Endeavor slammed it into the wall, leaving a dent in the hallway wall. Today was the first day of my high school life. I got in to UA through recommendation. Despite the common words of my father, he wants me to surpass the one person he could not, Allmight. I, however, have no want to surpass him. I just want to help people that can't get help...like my mom. I want to see her again but I'm afraid I'll just make her condition worse.
I sat up and winced as I tried to stand. Just rip it like a bandaid. I pushed myself up and onto my feet. The pain washed over me and I had to lean on my nightstand. Once the pain subsided I walked to my bathroom and took a shower. When I got out my eyes wandered to the mirror for me to look at the damage on my shoulder. As I shifted my body, the back of my shoulder came into view and I slightly gasped. It was a dark purple blotch covering my shoulder blade. I grazed over it gently with my fingers and I grimaced at the sudden discomfort. I got ready for school, brushing my teeth and hair and getting dressed. Although I didn't put my shirt and jacket on just yet. With my shirt in hand I opened my door and walked down the hall to my sister's room. I knocked on the door and heard shuffling come closer. My sister, Fuyumi, opened the door and made eye contact then a confused expression.
"Shoto did you need something? Why don't you have your shirt on?" she asked with a concerned tone. I turned to show her the bruise and signed with my free hand.
'Can you treat this for me?' She smiled and nodded, opening the door more to invite me in. I sat down on her bed, facing the wall as she got a medkit out. She was extremely careful not to press the bruise too much but when she put ointment on it, it really hurt. After she wrapped a bandage over it I put my shirt and jacket on.
'Thank you' I signed.
"No problem Shoto," Fuyumi hugged me and led me to the kitchen to get a quick breakfast. I just had a piece of toast before waving my sister goodbye. I wanted to leave before my father got up. The walk to UA was peaceful with the sun peeking over the horizon. Once I entered the gates of the hero high school I walked to my classroom. I knew the way since I took it upon myself to come to the "open house" where incoming students were allowed to wander around and check out the school. My brother, Natsuo, came with me and I think he had more fun than I did. I opened the very tall door in the classroom labeled "1-A" and was met with a few eyes looking at me. I'm not very good at socializing so this was sort of nerve racking. A very pink girl came up to me with a bubbly smile.
"Hi! I'm Mina Ashido, and you are?" she said as she held out her hand. I almost subconsciously signed my name. I lifted my hand but was cut off by another student with crimson red spikey hair.
"Mina are you blind? That's Shoto Todoroki! Endeavor's son," He said, shaking Mina violently. She gasped and took my hand with both her hands. I stood there with a blank expression but inside my head I was freaking out from the sudden contact.
"I'm so sorry! I don't know why I didn't see it sooner! Oh and this is Eijirou Kirishima," she said, smiling. I nodded my head in his direction for a mutual greeting. Then we all just stood there in awkward silence until someone spoke behind me.
"Shoto?" I turned around to see Momo Yaoyorozu. Since both our parents are rich we have met at parties and became good friends. I took my hand from Mina's grasp gently and waved at Momo.
"Oh thank god we're in the same class. I would have cried," Momo said as she hugged me. I slightly flinched but I think it was too subtle for anyone to notice.
'I bet you would have' I signed with a slight chuckle.
"Oh shut up," Momo said. We both looked at the two confused students behind us.
"I don't mean to be rude but since I'm confused I'll ask, is Todoroki deaf?" Kirishima said to Momo. We both shook our heads. Mina and Kirishima looked puzzled. Momo looked at me for approval and I just shrugged.
    "He's selectively mute"
