This novel was first published by Circlet Press in 2015, and I won't lie to you -- it's a dark book. It was originally meant to be the first of a trilogy exploring the terrible difficulties of coming out, especially in a society that wants to keep you locked up in the closet, even at the cost of your life. Maybe, on purpose, at the cost of your life.
In was in a dark place with my own queer narrative when I wrote the novel. It was supposed to the be the first of a trilogy--and it was never supposed to leave you feeling so hollow. However, difficulties with the publisher meant that the second and third novels never ended up getting written. I do regret that.
This is a very graphic erotica novel, featuring explicit and sensual sex scenes with alien genitalia. And as a tale about a brutally transphobic society, it also features scenes of: homophobia, misandry, trans hatred, bullying and physical violence, dubious consent, and rape.
However, it's also a story about fighting for the joy that you deserve to experience in your own authentic body and self, how you deserve to be authentic who you are in your soul, your right to choose and chase your own identity, and your right to experience and take pleasure in your own flesh.
There is a happy ending.
