"Oh? What is it?" Osamu asked, curious as to what Chuuya might have in store for him.
"Not telling," Chuuya said, grinning at the pout he was given.
"You know, if we're in disguise, I should give you a different nickname," Osamu smirked. His companion's smug expression turned to horror.
"I swear to-"
"How about Bunny? Darling? Honey?" Osamu watched Chuuya's expressions change rapidly as heat rushed to his face, coloring him pink and letting faint freckles make an appearance against the redness.
"Where the hell did that come from?" Chuuya's voice cracked.
"Well 'Bunny' for your height-"
Osamu was smacked upside the head by Chuuya, who's eyebrow twitched in irritation.
"-and because you're so cute too. Especially with the white hair. But I do have to say, I prefer the red," he finished.
"Just shut up, I want food."
"As my bunny wishes."
Chuuya was opening his mouth to complain again when Osamu grasped his hand suddenly and yanked him behind a building.
"Osa-"
Osamu covered Chuuya's mouth and gestured to the Akutagawa siblings walking down the street together in civilian clothes. Ryuunosuke was Osamu's main concern. The boy had enough of an obsession with him, he might be able to pick him out of the crowd like this. Chuuya followed his gaze and nodded in understanding. Chuuya pulled him further in behind the building with a finger to his lips. Osamu followed obediently, his attention more focused on Chuuya's fingers laced with his own. Chuuya brought him to an old little walkway to the next street over and they walked through.
"C'mon, I know a good cafe on this street. It would be better not to be on the street for much longer until we're sure they're gone," Chuuya said once they entered onto the new street.
"Lead the way, Bunny."
"I swear to every deity out there, Mack-"
"Nuh uh, Bunny. That's a recognizable nickname."
Osamu could tell that they fact he was right was eating at Chuuya.
"I swear to every deity out there, darling," Chuuya amended, the word "darling" dripping with sarcasm. "I will throw you to Ane-san."
"And be a widow? But you're so young, Bunny. Only 22, that's no age to be widowed at."
Chuuya rolled his eyes and pulled him into a quaint cafe.
True to his word, Osamu paid for food and drinks. It wasn't long when Chuuya and Osamu sat in a tucked away corner table, Chuuya with a breakfast sandwich and a black tea and Osamu with a small pastry and a coffee.
"-and then I ran off and jumped in the river when Kunikida wasn't looking. I floated down until Atsushi found me and pulled me out."
"Why am I not surprised he met you during another one of your suicide attempts?"
"Because you know me so well, my bunny~"
Chuuya rolled his eyes, clearly getting used to the nickname as he no longer looked so flustered at it's usage. He shoved another bite of his breakfast sandwich in his mouth before starting to speak again.
"About 2 years ago, I was on an overseas mission..."
As Chuuya relayed his own story, Osamu was enthralled in the man in front of him. It almost seemed unreal he was being given a second chance. There was only one thing he regretted about this moment. That he and Chuuya couldn't be themselves together in public. Mori was a risk as long as that executive position remained open and Chuuya remained under his command. And asking Chuuya to come to the ADA would be putting a target on his back and Osamu didn't want that.
But, he allowed himself to dream a bit with a soft smile as Chuuya conveyed his story. Chuuya coming to the ADA would allow so many more moments like this. Lunch in the downstairs cafe when both are off on break, going to and from work together. He doubted they'd be partners under Fukuzawa but he had no qualms with that. They may be powerful together but even he recognizes that their partnership in work was more for destruction with his own quick thinking and Chuuya's raw power.
"Osamu?" Chuuya broke into his thoughts, looking at him curiously.
"Sorry, Bunny. Got lost in thought."
"What about?"
"Nothing of importance, just a thought. It wouldn't be successful."
"Osamu, stop being so cryptic and tell me what's up."
"Just thought what it might be like had I brought you with me. Maybe it would be like this," Osamu admitted.
"Why didn't you?" Chuuya asked.
"I...the Port Mafia is your place and you're incredibly loyal to it, pulling you away seemed wrong. Besides, I'd just lost Oda, bringing you with me would have made you a target."
"You're focusing so much on the risk that you aren't considering my thoughts on the risk."
"Hm? And what are those?"
"That if you had asked me 4 years ago to drop everything and run even if I was a target, I would have." Chuuya's eyes bored into his own, his conviction cut through Osamu like a hot knife through butter.
"I could never ask that of you."
"You don't have to, what I decide to do with my life is up to me. The sheep were willing to stab me, and while you manipulated that, you could have never succeeded if the intent was not already even the tiniest bit there. You're selfish and annoying but you're also the person that made me realize a lot of shit. I am loyal to the mafia, that is true, but that does not mean I am not unaware of the twistedness of Mori. If you had told me four years ago only that you were leaving, I would not have thought twice before leaving with you while aware of the risk."
"But why?"
Chuuya looked at him like he had gone blue.
"Do I have to say it again? I may have been drunk off my ass that night but one thing I know about myself is that I'm a truthful drunk."
