[ this is gonna be an intro, not really a first chapter- really a recap ]

Nick and I were sitting on the front steps of my apartment. I was wondering why Nick was so silent.
He refused to make eye contact with me and his hands were shakey.
It made my stomach knot up with worry. I placed my hand on his.
"Nick, what's wrong?" I asked.
He looked at me, tears welling in his eyes as he was forcing them back.
"Y/N.. I'm so sorry but.. we can't do this anymore. I'm so stressed with school and I've been feeling like I wasn't good enough for you and I'm not there for you and i-"
Nick spilled out the words so fast I could barely understand. I froze.
"We have to break up. I'm so sorry." Tears flooded down Nick's face as he stood.
"Nick! Wait- please! We can make this work, I-" I began, choking as a waterfall of tears poured down my cheeks.
"No, we can't!" He turned, yelling.
"Why are you so persistent about everything?! We can't make this work! Our relationship has been falling apart for months!" He threw his hands up, his voice cracking.
I flinched. Nick rarely ever yelled at me.
"Bye, Y/N." Nick said, practically running off.
I watched him silently, not moving.
My jeans were stained with tears as I just stared.
I was trying to process what happened.
"It's really over.."
My hands shook.
"Was it something I did? Where did I go wrong? What did i-"
I stopped as I realized I was talking out loud.

"Y/N..?" I flinched as I heard a voice behind me. I didn't even hear the door open.
Karl was standing above me, concern in his eyes.
"What's wrong?! Are you okay?!" He panicked, pulling me to my feet.
I hugged onto him, sobbing as I barried my face into his hoodie.
He wrapped his arms around me, rubbing my back.
"It'll be okay.. it'll all be okay... Come on, Y/N. Let's get inside and you can tell me what happened.." He said, guiding me back into the building and to his apartment.

About an hour passed after I had calmed down and explained what happened to Karl.
"Karl.. thank you so much.. I'm so glad I have you as a friend.. you're so kind and I.. I don't know what I'd do without you and-" I choked out, still teary eyed.
"I'll always be here for you, Y/N, you got that? You're my best friend. I want you to be happy. I hate seeing you hurt." He said, smiling.
"Now, maybe try texting Nick..? I really doubt he meant to yell at you like that. He was probably just caught up in the moment and stuff." He said.
I nodded, taking out my phone.

Message could not be sent.

I blinked.
"He.. blocked my number." I said.
Karl winced.
"I'm so sorry, Y/N." He said, wrapping a comforting arm around my shoulder.
"Karl.." I whispered.
"Yeah?" He looked down at me.
"I don't think it will be okay this time.." I began crying again.
