Max's P.O.V
The bell rung signaling the end of religion class. Jalen and I waved to each other as I walked back to my desk, which was fairly close to Jalen's. Ms. Lawley walked into the room and told us what work we had to do. We had to watch an amoeba sisters video and finish the recap. I don't really like the recaps to be honest, they're pretty tedious to complete, but I don't hate it as much as art. Art is kind of lame, like why do I even need to color? I don't care if it looks plain at least I put something on the paper. Enough complaining, I should start working now.
Science ended pretty quickly, which meant it was snack time. I walked up to Jalen and put my hand on his head, playing with his hair. To be honest, I wasn't surprised at how soft it was. Anyone who sees it would just assume it was soft, because it is. Jalen looked surprised and shooed my hand away from his head.
"What are you doing?" Jalen asked surprised.
"I was just playing with your hair," I replied as I began to walk outside.
"Why though?"
"It's really soft!"
"Well you could of asked me first," Jalen blushed.
"Can I play with your hair?"
"Let me think, nope."
"Why would you even tell to ask if you would say no?"
Jalen laughed and ran down the stairs. I followed his actions and also ran down the stairs. Jalen almost tripped as he skipped the last step. He dropped his snack bag and watched as the contents fell out. Soon I reached the bottom of the stairs aswell. I bent down and started to push all of Jalen's thing back into his snack bag. Then I stood up bowed and stuck out his snack bag.
"Here you go your highness," I jokingly said in a British accent.
"You didn't have to do that Max, I could've picked it up!" Jalen complained.
"Hey, it's just a friend helping a friend, no need to worry."
"Oh, yeah," Jalen looked at the ground.
"Jalen you good?" Jalen grabbed his bag out of my hand as I stared up at him.
"Yeah I'm fine, sorry."
We both walked toward the back playground. An awkward silence was surrounding us. I wonder if I did something wrong, all I wanted to do was help. Maybe Jalen doesn't like when others help him. Yeah, that has to be it, I don't know what else could possibly be the problem. Jalen looks upset, but I have no idea what to say to him. As I was about to speak up Jalen and I reached our destination. Jalen went to sit by Jaron, while I sat by Levi.
"Max!" Levi exclaimed as I sat by him and looked down.
"What's wrong?" Loeka asked as he leans forward to see me.
"I think that I upset Jalen," I replied.
"What did you forget?" Levi said.
"That's the thing, I don't know."
"What do you mean you don't know?" Loeka questioned over dramatically.
"Tell us what happened," Levi demanded.
I told them from start to finish the events that took place beforehand. They better come up with a reason why Jalen is mad. Levi and Loeka were whispering to each other to make sure I couldn't hear their conversation. I looked over at Jalen who was whispering something in Jaron's ear. Jaron then looked at me as I gave him a confused look. He squinted his eyes and gave me an "I'm watching you" movement. Jalen hit his arm as he looked away, while Jaron just laughed. I then looked back at Levi and Loeka, they looked like they just made an amazing discovery. Levi turns to me, Loeka doing the same shortly after.
"Dude, what if Jalen likes you?" Levi said as he smiled.
"No," I blankly replied. "That's stupid, how did you even come up with that?"
"Loeka knows why Jalen is so upset."
I quickly looked at Loeka with an excited expression. Once I know why he's upset, I can do something to fix my mistake. Loeka smiled and started to drum on the grass. Levi added to Loeka's drumroll by also drumming on the grass. Loeka and Levi looked at each other and gave the other a thumbs up. They both stopped drumming as Loeka started to talk.
"He's upset because you called him a friend," Loeka boasted. "You can praise me for figuring it out now."
"Jeez, why did you have to give me false hope?" I said as I face palmed.
Levi put a hand on his heart and said, "We did not give you false hope!"
"Yeah, what Levi said!" Looks exclaimed as he acted hurt.
"Very funny you guys, but there is no way someone like Jalen likes me," I said.
I continued to eat my food as I pondered if Jalen was actually upset because I called him a friend. Does he actually like me back? I blushed as I closed my food and put my mask on, even though I wasn't finished with my food. Levi nudged my shoulder with his elbow. I looked up to see him pointing forward. Jalen was signaling for me to come to him. Instantly, I jumped up and walked over to Jalen.
"Jalen, are you still upset?" I asked as I pouted.
"Yes, in fact, I am really upset," Jalen sarcastically said.
"So, you're not upset?"
"Nope I got over it already," Jalen smiled and gave me a thumbs up.
"What were you upset about anyways?"
"Guess what?"
"What?"
"Chicken butt."
"You're not funny."
"I'm being serious though, try and guess what I was upset about."
"I don't know, you're food dropping?"
"I can't believe you got that first try."
"Wait, so you weren't upset that I called you a friend?"
"No, of course not, who told you that!" Jalen looked away.
"Loeka came up with a theory that you like me, but there's no way that's true."
"Yeah, there's no way!" Jalen covers his face.
The bell then rang. I stood up and dusted dirt off of my shorts. Jalen then stood up after me and walked back to the classroom. Why did Jalen look so nervous back there, he's usually never nervous. I wonder if he is sick or something because he's acting stranger than usual today. Jalen, what is going on inside of your head?
