Intro

I found myself staring at the ground again, each crack I had come to know. The constant ticking of the clock outside my cell, became a constant reminder of my inevitable ‘trapped death’.

I heard the bell ring; it was as if I was in school again, lining up for assembly. The uniforms here are far less inspired than the ones I wore then, white with black stripes. The irony, here the colours seemed to fit so well together, almost as if they complemented each other.

As I slipped into my usual attire, I heard my name being called out, 'Jelani'.  My time had come. I packed my tooth brush, my books, letters and a picture she had drawn for me before. I can’t say her name anymore, not out of lack of memory, more of shame, I couldn't say any of their names him, him, and her. My step when I walked hadn’t been the same since, I sort of stuttered, every second step I made. It weighed heavily on me, it was I who caused their deaths; all of them.

I walked through the dark passageway this one was far quieter than I thought. It was almost as if they wanted me to reflect on my life, on my actions and to all of a sudden go through a rebirth; no such thing occurred. Instead my chains felt tighter, I could feel a dark shadow approaching, and again my name was called. At each calling my name felt less apparent, less mine. I was not courageous at all; in fact I was a coward always scared of being alone.

The doors in front of me opened, a bright light momentarily blinding me before revealing what lay ahead, a room with 5 people in it: her, him, him and her and the man in black. He raised his hand and gestured his black gown flowing back and forth as he did so. I stuttered forward my feet dragging against the room’s hardwood. I climbed up the few steps, each step feeling higher than the next. When I got to the top, I faced them, their eyes piercing me; each stare cutting me. "Daddy," I heard her whisper. I looked at the black figure and nodded at that moment he placed the rope against my neck and suddenly there was blackness around me and again they disappeared...............
