Mackenzie's P.O.V.
I had finally done it, ran away. I had packed everything I needed, even taken my favorite pet. She was a small medium sized dog, the runt of her liter. Her name was Onix and she was 7 years old, I had her for almost half of my 15 year old life. She was a black lab and her eyes literally defined the term 'Puppy Dog Eyes'. I loved her more than anything else right now.
It was night time when I had left, Mother being at work and my sister, Chelsea, was God knows where. Dad, well he was currently out of the picture, not having him living in the same house as us since I was about 5. Sure he gave me calls saying, "I miss you," or "I love you," or "See you soon." but I could tell they were just empty promises, almost like everything else these days...
I had gotten everything I had needed and ran as fast as humanly possible, maybe even faster. I don't know how far I went, but I was on the second night of briskly paced walking. That had to had to have put some distance between me and what I didn't like to call 'home'. I was cold, wet from rain to the point where my hair almost looked black. It's normal rich brown color with tints of gold and bronze in the sun was now scraggly like always when wet. It was gonna be a bitch to brush, but then again, with its thickness, it always was.
My eyes were heavy-lidded, their color was probably dark brown seeing as how tired I was. Oh, I forgot to mention my eyes change color to my emotion. Not like red or anything, well maybe small tints of it when I'm furious, but normally they changed between green, brown, and the hazel color they had been defined as.
Being 15 and forced to walk was terrible, but I was planning on hot-wiring a car down the road. The first nice one I was to come upon actually. I know beggars can't be choser, but I don't want a junker. I didn't know where I was, but I knew I had to keep on walking. I pulled along my large wheely suitcase and tried to control my dog's constant pulling on the leash with the other. I had no idea how Onix was so energetic, but she was. Even after 2 days of no eating, no sleep, and no stopping she was nowhere near as worn out as I.
Then, suddenly Onix's leash snapped at the collar and she took off running. Straight into the middle of the road, no doubt. Me being me, of course I followed her, desperate to get her back. But hey, it was around 2 A.M. in the middle of a desolate country roadway, and I could see the crappy motel up ahead. I was more than a bit eager to get in there and crash, I normally don't sleep good if at all.
I was in the middle of the road, re-attaching the leash to Onix's collar when the car came. I looked up a moment too late, and I felt the cars impact on Onix and I. The car was a classic, a muscle car. I was in love with these old cars, but that really wasn't the moment for ogling. Me and Onix were thrown different ways and I heard her yelp. We didn't fly far, maybe 5 or 6 feet. I was conscience enough to feel the pain and hear the squeal of the tires as they came to a stop. At least it wasn't going to be a dick/bitch who was gonna Hit and Run.
I heard a young guy's voice say, "Oh shit!" then heard the punching in of a phone number, frantic fingers fumbling and cursing a few times. I heard someone pick up from the other line and the boy, who I would think to be about my age and not even old enough to drive spoke timidly, "Dean! I hit a girl! No, not like that! In the Impala! Down the road, please get here now! With the First Aid Kit, too!"
So, what? He was gonna have his bud patch me up? I felt more than saw him kneel down next to me and he said quietly, "I gotta check where you're hurt, okay?" I didn't respond, just blinked lazily at him as if saying, "you just hit me with a car, can't do much worse". He gave me a shy, sort of apology smile and said, "I'm really sorry, I'm only 15 and I can't drive well. I couldn't see in the rain either, so Mother Nature can take some of the blame..." He looked up at me from under his lashes and my breath caught. I thought Onix had master the 'Puppy Dog Eyes' Look, but no. This boy had it down pat. I managed to weakly nod and say, "Me too."
