"He is a human first!"

Those words that rang in Nicolas's mind as the morning sun rises. Why are these memories coming back to him now..

———————

"My name is Avery of House Lamár."

"That's good. Go on"

"I am 21 of age, i was...."

"You were..." - the man egged on trying to lead me to the correct answer

But I can never seem to get to that moment.

"You were in an accident, Avery" - he finished

I can feel my anxiety starting to rush like a boiling pot of water

"Accident" - I spoke only to have flashes of horrible images pass in my head. Enough for me to stand up from the small table.

"Avery, it's ok. Calm down."

"Nicolas?!"

"Calm down. It's ok" - he repeated "you are Avery of House Lamár. Nicolas is not here. You are at the doctors remember?"

And suddenly everything began to slowly shine in clarity. I touched my head, my heart beating so hard it could come out of my chest.

"Right yes, I am Avery of House Lamár. I'm sorry, I still can't remember what happened that night"

"No we are progressing. Do you remember you said Nicolas? Does this name bring anything significance?"

Nicolas...

Why does that name...

Only bring me....

Nightmares

"Avery, I know you want to understand these visions but we don't have to push it." - the doctor sighs as he writes something in his books "Memories are not like lost trinkets you stumble upon. Sometimes you may never find them and I want you to be ok with that possibility too."

I didn't speak or respond to his sudden change of thought. I have been here for what almost feels like ages.

My eyes peered toward the window that had a large oak tree outside.

"I want you to be careful" - the doctor advised "sometimes it's better to not remember...everything"

I walked out of the clinic with my regular prescription of drugs that I couldn't even pronounce, letting out a sigh.

The more I go to the doctor the less I feel like I am getting answers.

Like being trapped in a game, stuck in a loop and not knowing where to go to proceed.

I remember my parents were one of the first people to mine a rare crystal used in many luxurious gowns. Both my parents had passed and I was the next heir in line for wealth.

But apparently most of it was lost in a fire.

Rare paintings, clothes and money were all burned to the ground.

That fire was apparently how I lost my memory, only waking up in ergastulum and being with doctors since then.

I was told everyone perished in it.

Even my fiancé, Hugo.

The doctors told me my injuries were horrible and that I had laceration marks and multiple bruises.

Like....

Hugo and I had been tortured before the fire started...

But I don't remember any of it.

I can see the scars on my skin the closed wounds that have healed.

Am I ready to open them back up? To see the demons hiding behind?

"Thank you for taking me to the market Nicolas! I do feel a lot more safer with you here" - Avery cooed at him

Even as an infant Nico has always lacked nurturing words and gentleness.

"Come Nico! Have you had chocolate before?" - she latched onto his forearm with a bright smile on her face.

The sudden abruptness made him pause. Was she not frighten by him? Does she do this to everyone openly?

There Lady Lamár was linked around his arm dragging him inside a store.

"I heard it's imported from over seas made from beans but taste amazing! Try it" - she laughs grabbing a small piece of candy to give it to him.

He has never met anyone like her. The lady was so sure of her actions, not worried about her status or how she looked with him.

Nico has never felt more like a person until...

"How dare you!" - a store owner yells taking a large pan to slap Nicolas to the ground. "Fucking filth"

The man grabs a shotgun and points it directly at Nicolas's forehead.

"Stop! Are you insane?!" - Avery shouts running to help Nicolas up.

What was more surprising to him was that she stood until he line of fire.

For....him.

"You know the rules! Ain't no fucking Tags in establishments! Any minute they can go apeshit"

"He's done nothing! He is just helping me!" - She protected

"He's nothing but a nasty fucking Tag"- the man insulted

"He is a human first!" - the lady shouted back

Avery's voice resonating down to the pits of his soul.

He was a human.

A person.

"What right are you to point your gun at him?! Because he might be dangerous? Not from where I am standing!" - she shouted

"Then you can die along...." - the man growls only to be stopped by Monroe.

"I hope you have not shown my friends any trouble there" - Monroe laughs holding a glass of wine and suddenly like seeing a ghost the man retracts. "But honestly Hugh your wife is one sight to see. I can see why your eyes are set on her now. Nico and I will forever be jealous"
