In the suburban town of Percy, Illinois, Summer was in full bloom. All of the girls were getting tan and going swimming, showing off their newly bought bikinis to hug their perfect figures, but not Annika. The girl in question calmly walked through the slightly chilly library, humming an old Muse song as she hopped upstairs. The small teen spotted the bookshelf she was looking for, and strode over to the array of comics. "Second row from the bottom, about 20 or so books from the left side"  went her mantra as she tried to look for the comic and-she couldn't see it, for there was a man in front of the bookcase, reading an X-Men comic. He appeared to be about a foot taller than her, and she seemed to lose her ability to speak. After a few minutes of contemplation, she spoke.

"U-uh...Sir?" He turned around with a warm smile and she nearly dropped her book bag. The only word to describe him was just...wow. He had dark green eyes, nutmeg hair, and he seemed to be in his mid-teens.

"Whatcha need, chickadee?" His verdant eyes shone as he spoke, and it took her a while to remember what she was going to say.

"I-I was just looking for a comic." She attempted a slight smile, which turned out to look quite dorky. He nodded and politely stepped to the side, allowing her to grab the comic she was searching for.

"The Umbrella Academy.'" He read the title to himself, noticing how she hugged the comic close to her body. "Lemme guess, it means a lot to you?" He raised an eyebrow slightly.

"Yeah, it really does...." She nervously brushed her bangs out of her face, revealing a bracelet that read '9 is my doctor'.

"You've got to be kidding me..." He trailed off, looking at her wrist with a stupid grin. She raised an eyebrow and asked what he was speaking about.

"Nine and five are my favorites." He grinned and looked down at her.

"I thought no one else liked nine besides me!" She smirked happily.

"Nope, I certainly do." He winked "I'm Carter by the way. Nice to meet ya."

"Likewise, Carter. I'm Nova." She had a slight blush on her face.

"Nova? Is that....short for something?" He tilted his head in amusement. If he knew her more, he might say something about he being so radiant or bright, but he simply waitee for her answer.

She slowly but surely pulled a slim book out of her bag and thumbed through it. Reaching page 123, she showed him the top picture. "For art class, I drew a picture of this. We had to draw something that meant a lot to us, and this comic did." She flipped the book closed, using her thumb as a bookmark. The title read The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, and she sighed happily. "So, that's how I got the nickname Nova. If you really feel like calling me otherwise, I'm Annika."

His eyes smiled as he adjusted his Star Wars t-shirt, then suddenly hummed a song that sounded remarkably like her alarm clock.

Annika opened her eyes to hear the same song.

        "Shit."
