how it is or how it was
(season one)

Claudia fuckin' Shelby,

Where do we start? Maybe at the beginning, but what if the story never really ends? Would we just keep going on and on?

Claudia was a real firecracker, always starting fights. She preferred wearing pants over skirts, and she had a habit of swiping John's cap whenever she could.

Aunt Polly used to warn her, saying, "You've got Tommy's smarts, Arthur's temper, and John's pride. That's a dangerous mix, my dear."

In her younger years, Claudia was a bit of a troublemaker. As time passed, she found herself entangled in the Shelby family business. However, numbers weren't her forte, so she gravitated towards more hands-on tasks. By the tender age of seventeen, negativity seemed to engulf her. Drugs became her refuge, a numbing agent for the harsh realities of life. Each day, she'd sit amidst the snow, feeling the weight of impending doom.

❝ An egoistic death ❞ Claudia once wrote.

Polly and Ada were well aware that Claudia's humanity began to slip away in 1917, amidst the worsening situation in France. It was a tale all too familiar in Birmingham – falling in with the wrong crowd. Claudia couldn't shake the haunting thought that each morning might be her brothers last. And when she managed to rise from her bed, she'd vanish for days, leaving worry and dread in her wake. Polly, with a heavy heart, awaited not just black envelopes from the boys but from Claudia too. The relentless fear and anguish only served to harden Claudia's heart, and her late-night returns only fueled suspicion. The notion of a noose lingering around her neck visited her thoughts more often than she dared to admit.
