Cinder stepped out of the carriage and rushed up the first few stairs.
“Miss Cinder!” Gareth shouted.
Cinder’s steps faltered on the seventh step of the staircase. She turned toward him. “Yes, Gareth?”
“I would just like to say what a pleasure it has been driving you around theses past few days,” Gary said.
Cinder smiled. “The feeling is mutual, Gareth.” She stepped up a few more stairs and turned back toward him. “I’ll see you in a few hours.”
Gareth nodded and Cinder jogged up the rest of the stairs. She entered the ballroom and made her way down the grand staircase.
She pushed through the crowd to get closer to Theodore. She wished she had any idea what she was going to do. Or say, for that matter. As she rushed through she stepped on skirts and shoes but she tripped only once.
Into Theodore’s arms. They both tumbled to the ground, Cinder landing on top of the prince. She heard snickers and felt her face grow hot.
“Oh, my,” Cider said, scrambling to her feet. “I am so sorry!”
“It’s okay Cinder,” Theodore said. More people laughed at her name.
Cinder helped the prince up onto his feet and curtsied. “No, really, it’s okay,” Theodore repeated.
A man about Ella’s age came up behind Theodore and tapped him on the shoulder. “Your majesty, it is time.”
Cinder watched as they made their way up the grand staircase. The man’s voice echoed off the walls with perfect acoustics. “His majesty, Prince Theodore would like to announce his bride.”
Cinder’s breath caught. She made her way to the back exit, not wanting to be there when he told the whole ballroom who he was planning on marrying. She didn’t care whether it was her or one of the other girls he’d danced with.
“It was a pleasure getting to meet and dance with all of the ladies in this ballroom but as we all know, there can be only one queen.”
Cinder kissed her index and middle fingers and directed them toward Theodore. She sighed and opened the door.
“But I met one girl that… intrigued me,” Theodore continued.
Cinder stepped out the door, refusing to hear what the prince said next.
