The Letter

After a big discussion with everyone back at Solreef, Sophie, Grady, and Edaline had just gotten back to Havenfield. Though Sophie didn't want to admit it, she was exhausted. Especially since she'd just breathed in a bunch of balefire smoak.

Grady and Edaline had insisted that they all have a check from Elwin before they did anything. So before they'd left, Mr. Forkle called and asked him to come by Solreef and give everyone a check up; which had gone fine. However, Elwin had been a little confused at the worry and other unpleasant emotions everyone seemed to be carrying on their shoulders, so he asked what was the matter. To which Mr. Forkle told him about the balefire. And he didn't really seem all that surprised, which Sophie wasn't expecting.

She walked into the doomed halls of Havenfield thinking about what had happened. They'd seriously burned down the neverseen's entire storage house and managed to grab some seemingly useless scrolls and the two caches. Tirgen had read through a few of the scrolls and hadn't found anything of particular use, but promised to keep looking after they left.

She had both caches stored in her pocket for the light leep home, but stuck her hand inside to just be sure they were still there. Sure enough she felt their cool, smooth surfaces inside her pocket. It wasn't like they would suddenly just disappear. But with everything that had happened to them she wouldn't have been surprised if they had.

She jogged up the spiral staircase and walked into her room. She would need a safe place to keep these caches until they started trying to open them, so she quickly decided she'd keep them with her spyball. As no one had yet found out about it.

And for good reason too, if the council discovered she had an unregistered spyball they'd go nuts and would probably never trust her again. Making her feel like the villain again. But seriously, they had secrets of their own that they would refuse to share with her. So why not have a few of her own? Sure, most things were better to be open about, but this was her little secret that no one else needed to know about.

She shut her desk door and flopped onto her bed. It was as if things just got crazier and crazier each day. Like it had only been just under a week and already things had gotten hectic. She had burned down the neverseen's storehouse like ten minutes after discovering it existed while accidentally putting her friends at risk, since she had forgotten to warn them that she was going to break the sconces and officially started a war even though it had really been one the whole time.

She didn't start the war and refused to believe that she did, and also refused to believe what she had done was wrong; because in her mind it wasn't. If they kept doing the same old things nothing was going to get better. There wouldn't be any progress. Things would just keep going and going on like this. She wouldn't have it anymore.

Also, Keefe had woken up! But was currently refusing to say anything. He had been staying at Elwin's place for the past few days to let him monitor his recovery. However she was not allowed to visit.

It made her bitter thinking about it. Oralie had asked him if he had been okay with that and he nodded. He didn't want her there. Yet at the same time she remembered the look she had seen in his eyes. There was no fight left, he had been absolutely exhausted and just didn't seem to have anything more to give.

She sighed. He had been through so much over his lifetime yet still put up a fight. He rebelled against his parents constantly and was always the stubborn one. She smiled thinking about it. Yet what his mother had done to him had just pushed him to the brink. He didn't deserve to have a mother like Lady Gisela. She was heartless and cruel. She'd done freaky experiments on Keefe without even asking him if he'd been alright with it.

Sure the Black swan had messed with her DNA before she was born, but whenever they were going to unlock another new power she'd been hiding they'd always asked her permission first, and were completely okay with not going through with it if she said no.

However Lady Gisela had bound Keefe to King Eknie's throne against his will and forced him through some pretty traumatic looking stuff. She had stayed with him through to the end that day and he'd managed to hold on; and even though he was refusing to talk he was still there trying to figure things out. She wished she could visit him. Make sure he was alright. He deserved happiness more than anyone else in the world yet all he got was trauma and heartache and pain. She had talked to him telepathically a few days ago and he seemed to be hanging in there, though he seemed to miss her. At least she hoped he did. Because she missed him. Everyone did. It was different without him. Things just weren't the same. She hoped he was doing alright with his wacky new abilities.

Iggy squeaked beside her. His cage had been propped up onto her bed and he was pressing his face through the bars of his cage, seeming to plead for some treats. She chuckled and rubbed his fur. Which looked different now. She wondered why she didn't notice it right away. It was splotched with all sorts of colors making him look like a mermaid. Yet there were black stripes all along him.

She leaned in to look more closely when she noticed a piece of paper sitting beside the cage and picked it up. She unfolded it and was surprised to see Keefe's handwriting inside. Her heart did a little flip but she ignored it, passing it off as worry. Her heart beat through her chest as she started reading, yet sunk farther and farther into the pit of her stomach with every line he'd written.

By the end she had tears brimming her eyes and a hand clamped over her mouth to stop herself from bursting into tears. Almost regretfully she read the last line, and at the bottom he'd signed it with, "Love, Keefe"

Some time through reading the letter she'd gotten up and started pacing, now she stood on her flower pettled carpet staring at his words.

He'd run away. And didn't even say anything in person to her. He probably knew she would have tried to stop him. But who wouldn't have?

Yet here she stood, not being able to do anything about it. He was already gone and she had no clue where in the forbidden cities he's gone off to.

All of a sudden the lump that had lodged itself into her throat escaped out her mouth and a cry left her lips. She didn't try to stop the flow of tears this time. They flowed down her face and hit the carpet as she fell to her knees.

She let it all out. All of her pent up emotions. She gripped her carpet in her fists, crushing the pink flower petals in them to prevent herself from throwing something. She didn't know how much time had passed, but Grady and Edaline must have heard her crying because they were there, and their arms were around her in an embrace. They seemed to know what had happened without her even telling them.

"I'm sorry Sophie." Edaline whispered, "I know how much he meant to you." Her arms tightened around her as if she was worried she would go jump off the cliff and throw herself into the sea.

She wanted to. But that wouldn't solve anyone's problems. She would just be leaving the elvin world in shambles if she did, so it wasn't an option. Plus, she couldn't leave her family and friends, the people that truly cared about her.

He thought it was better for everyone if he left. He couldn't have been more wrong. Things were going to be a hundred times worse without him. Without his silly jokes and his rebelliously stubborn nature. He didn't realize how amazing and brave he actually was.

Why did things always work out this way? No one seems to realize what they really have until it's gone. Now Keefe left for the forbidden cities in an attempt to hide himself from his mom. All so she couldn't use him to harm anyone else. His friends; the people he seemed to care about most.

He might have resorted to crazy ways in taking down his mother. Given up on fighting. Even given up on himself. But she wouldn't. It didn't matter if Grady or Edaline or if anyone else tried to stop her because no matter what she would find him. Find him, and bring him home; to the people that loved him. To the people that cared about him. They would win this stupid war no matter what. And above all else, she would get Keefe back.
