I haven't been able to get good night sleep since Nate caught me and Desi. That was six months ago. No one has heard or seen him for months. The police aren't much help. I know I don't love him but I still worry. He is the father of my child. Even though I don't want to be in a relationship with him doesn't mean I don't want him in the baby's. Desi has been a great help with all this but I know she is worried too.
I was laying on the couch with Desi. Sometime around one in the morning and we were watching the news channel. Just another sleepless night filled with kicking and worrying about where Nate could be. Moments later, I felt the baby start to kick like always. I started to sit up because tonight he kicked a little harder. Desi looked at me with a little worry but I laughed off. I grabbed Desi's hand and placed it on my stomach. She felt the kick and smiled. She got on the floor and sat in front of me. Her head directly in front of my stomach. She started to talk to the baby in the sweetest voice.
"Hey babygirl, I think you should calm down before mama gets mad."
"You mean baby boy."
"I think its a girl."
"I'm telling you, I'm having a boy. I can feel it."
"We'll see, mamas."
Before I say anything the news person said something. "Viewers, if you know who this John Doe is please call the police department." I looked at the TV shocked to see Nate's picture on the screen. I pat Desi to turn around. She said shit and ran to grab her phone off the table to dial the number on the screen. I placed my hand over my mouth and started to cry. I was happy yet scared of what happened.Nate was in a hospital in the next state over. He has been in a coma for six months. He had got in his car and went to get drunk. Ended up in a very bad accident after drunk driving. The police couldn't find his wallet or phone to get his name. He got in an accident the night after he caught us. I couldn't help but to blame myself for this.
Desi and I drove to the hospital where Nate was. I walked in the room to see Nate hooked on all types of machines. I wanted to cry at the sight of it. I went to the chair beside him and never left it. Desi tried bringing me food but I couldn't eat. I was too busy hoping he will pull through it and blaming myself for it happening.
I visited him everyday everyday,s ometimes even stayed the night. We had him transferred to a closer hospital. Desi thought it was bad for the baby to be stressing over this but I wouldn't listen. He needed someone to be here for him. It had to be me and the baby. I stayed by his side no matter what.
Few days go by and there weren't any changes. Desi had two classes today and said I couldn't go to the hospital today. She literally took my keys. I couldn't stay here all day. I then got a phone call from the hospital. They were talking about pulling the plugs and needed to talk. I got scared. I called a cab and rushed straight to the hospital. I told the doctors a few more days. I sat by him and started to talk, hoping he could hear me.
"Nate you need to wake up. I'm having your baby and you need to be in their life. Please wake up for us, for your Desi." The tears started falling more and more by the second. I turned away from him. Seconds later I heard coughing and choking. Nate was fighting the tube. I yelled for the nurse to come. She walked in and started to remove it. I stepped into hall while they checked his vitals. I was so relieved to know he was alive and okay. The nurse called me in the room and said he was doing so much better. The doctors left and it was just me and Nate in the room. He opened his eyes as I walked towards him. I just stood by the bed, couldn't form any words. He looked at me then looked down at my belly.
"How far along are you"
"Seven months."
"What are you having."
"Decided to wait. I think its a boy."
He just gave a small smiled. My eyes just filled with tears. "I'm sorry Nate, I didn't want you to find out that way." I blurted out without thinking. I just wanted to say it.
"Do you love her."
"Yes."
"Then its okay as long as you two are happy. I want to be in you guys life."
The tears began to fall as he said that to me. I grabbed his hand and talked to him until visiting hours were over. I called a cab and went home to see Desi. I didn't care that she will probably be mad, I just wanted to be with her.I walked in through the door and Desi ran up to me. She threw her arms around me. I told her what happened before she could get a word out. She smiled at knowing her brother was fine and that he was okay wit us. I held onto Desi for the rest of the night until I fell asleep in her arms knowing she was mine.
Two months later I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. He had my nose but had Desi and Nate's eyes. Derrick was what we named him. It's just one of many names I decided on. Nate chose to be in Derrick's life as a uncle figure and we will tell him the truth once he is older. I was so happy this came together in the end.
Years passed by and things were in happier times. Nate married a girl he graduated with and had kids of their own. I graduated and got my Bachelor's Degree and owns a business that supports artists and own a few art galleries. Original pieces of mine and Desi's are the main attractions. Desi and I got married and had another baby, a girl named Charlotte. We still had ups and downs but it all worked out for the better. Things worked out for me.
Oh yeah and I finished the painting in the abandoned garage. Desi helped since it had parts of her life too. I own the garage now, it is part of the galleries along with other abandoned buildings and warehouses where you can find artworks. I found a lot of the artists of the old paintings. We all got together and painted a moral for the whole city to see. So yeah, it all worked out.
The End!
