Chapter 6 Road trip

We were all seated back in the van, in exactly the same places we were before we arrived, Charlie announced “Joshua, it is now almost 9:30 at night. Before we leave town and head on the almost 200 mile trip to Sweetwater County Juvenile Detention Center, are you hungary, do you need to use the restroom, do you have any questions?”

I just sat there for a second trying to think, I replied with “um, I don’t know, um I think so.” filled with nothing but mumbles and insecurity.

The Lieutenant just had a big smile on his face that I didn’t see until he cleared his throat which is what got my attention. I turned and looked at him, and saw the kindest smile I had all night. He then started talking not in some big mean scary police language. He just plainly stated, “Officer Durante, pull over at that mini mart, then we will go to the burger joint one block down. I want Officer Durante and Detective Mills to go into the bathroom with Joshua, and Charlie. If anyone asks, Just state that he was a witness and we are taking him somewhere. Do not state he is arrested or anything like that. Joshua, if you try to pull a rabbit, you will not make it and that will make this be a whole lot worse than it already is. I am really trying to show you a lot of respect, don’t shit on me. Joshua you have to use the urinal the farthest from the door, stay there until everyone has had a chance to use the restroom. Then you can wash your hands. We will get drinks, snacks, whatever for everyone and I will buy. Then when we leave, we will go get us all burgers at the drive through for our voyage. Do you understand young man?”

I just nodded my head yes, and tried to mumble the best I could “yes Sir, thank you.”

He replied with “good now I know I told you that you would be in handcuffs, for this trip. I really meant it, because I was not sure the Honorable District Attorney would be able to get us permission to transport you. If you do not try to behave, and make me think for one second you are going to escape, or even not do exactly what I say I will wrestle you to the ground. I will handcuff you in front of everyone. If they ask I will even tell them why you have been arrested and how we were trying to be nice and show you some respect, do you understand Joshua?”

All I could do was shake my head yes, because when I opened my mouth no words would form to come out. I never took my eyes off of the Lieutenant, and was wondering if he was nice or an asshole. I couldn’t decide. He then started to talk again to me really softly so only Charlie and I could hear what he was saying “Josh good because I really didn’t like arresting you. Your attorney has known me for 25 or 30 years now, Charlie?”

Charlie said “you old softie it has only been 24 years and you know it. You graduated from the NYPD Academy in 1992, you worked there for 3 years, then to Cheyenne for 2 years, then moved here and was on the police force here for 1 week when you arrested my client for a DUI and we had to go to court for it. Now if I am 10 years older and I can remember all the details, why can’t you old man?” With the kindest grin and showing the obvious respect they had for each other and still being adversaries.
The Lieutenant just smiled and nodded his head to Charlie. “What sucks is I actually believe your story but have no way to prove it. I have video of you kicking the two boys, and their parents were pushing for your arrest. That is all I need to say, you did it and without any proviable mitigating evidence I was forced to arrest you. I will try to make this as pleasant as possible, but son jail, juvenile detention, prison none of them really are pleasant.”

We stopped used the restroom, got some drinks and poptarts for me for the trip, then went to the Burger Shack, got more food and drove towards our destination. Eating while we drove, only stopping one time alongside the road for me to pee.

When I got back into the van Charlie and I now knew his full name Lieutenant James Bicknel were having a conversation about promoting the indecent exposure of a minor child, by allowing me to pee standing alongside the road even though no cars were seen at all from either direction, let alone houses. This conversation was droning back and forth between them for what seemed like forever.

I sat there and picked on the leftover burger and fries then a cherry pop tart. All of the sudden Charlie shook me awake stating we had arrived at our destination and it was 3:15 in the morning and I had already earned 1 day jail credit.

We were in the same parking garage at the police station I was originally at I thought because it looked exactly the same. I mean the same big garage door, the same chain link area to park the van in, the exact same chain link area by the entrance door. I was kinda dumbfounded and confused.

We got out and went to the door and it was the exact same glass window with the same lockers for their guns, the same paint on the wall and the same countertop behind the big glass window. This just had to be the same exact place. They had to be lying about it being a different place. Then I quickly realized all the people there were wearing Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Department uniforms and were a different color. Wow did they save money and use the exact same blueprint everywhere.
