Taking a Break

When we get to Oliver's house there are a few cop cars, an ambulance, and some fire trucks there. Sam and I look in amazement at how badly the house looks. The once beautiful golden house is now pitch black and surrounded by smoke. The windows shattered to a million pieces. Neighbors and family are surrounding the house. We run up to one of the paramedic's and ask them where Oliver is. He was a little confused at first until we told him he was the teenager they got out of the house. He told us he was sent to the hospital 10 minutes ago. Sam and I run back to the car and hop in.

We get inside the car and Sam speeds off. The car ride seems like it a year, but we finally get there in time to see some of Oliver's family standing outside talking. We both walk up to them to see that it is his Aunt Shelby, his cousin Luci, and Grandpa Mike. "Are we allowed to see Oliver?" I ask as I shove my hands into my pockets. "Ya. Just go up to the lady at the front desk and ask for what room he's in. I think it's number 4." his Grandpa says with a cigarette sitting lifeless in his fingertips near his pale lips.

I grab Sam's arm and we walk quietly in through the gliding doors. When we reach the inside of the doors I stop, look back at her, and tell her "Stay here while I go talk to the lady at the front desk.". She nods her head in agreement and I turn and walk towards a short, medium sized lady with a stack of papers in her hand. Before I reach her side she notices me and glances her eyes up to look in my direction. "Can I help you with anything?" she asks laying the papers down on the desk next to her. "Can you tell me where Oliver Cooper is?" As she she starts walking I motion for Sam to follow. She leads us down a hallway towards a door that is marked "Do not enter unless permitted by staff and/or faculty". She slides a key card across a lock near the door and it clicks open. When we walk inside toward door number 4 I get an uneasy feeling in my stomach. As I step into the doorway of the room I see Oliver hooked to machines that I have never seen before, and burns that look like the inside of a rotten plum. I grab Sam's hand as tears start to burn the back of my throat.
