Ovie
The canteen was never my thing. I hated that I had to sit alone because Favour wasn't around. She was still preoccupied with her Damien. I hoped their relationship would last but, that girl could wake up one day and decide she'd had enough.
The food here was nice. I always ordered for the special, Rice and Stew with the either goat meat, beef or kpomo. There was always a bottle of water or Pure water and Fanta for me to drink. The stew was sweet, peppery and a bit sticky. It basically banged. It kept me coming for more.
I observed the students as they chatted amongst one another. It's either you talked or received the talk. I finished up what was left of my Fanta and got up. The walk back to my hostel was tiring. The sun was slowly setting so, I wasn't sweating.
A few feet away from me stood a couple. The guy placed a kiss on his girl's forehead. The girl pulled back and moved to hug him. As I saw the scene unfold, I couldn't help but remember him. We had no intimate moments but, there was just something about him. Something I needed to find out. Something I needed to feel.
I had to take a bath once I got back to the hostel. I felt uncomfortable from all the sweating. I was closer to it now. I pulled out my phone to check the time but then I spotted a figure in a black, expensive looking car. It was parked under the mango tree I liked to stand under.
I stood still as my heart raced wildly. He's here. I thought to myself. He looked deep in thought as he typed away on his phone. I looked around and then back at him.
"What's he doing here?" I asked no one in particular. But, I didn't need to know the answer. All I needed was to talk to him. I began to walk towards his car. Ovie, just breathe and talk to him. I coached myself as I got closer. I was attracted to him. It was that simple.
I knocked on his window and gave a small smile when he looked up at me. Something about him made me shy. He smiled back and turned off his phone. Motioning for me to step back a bit, he pushed the door open and came out. He slammed the car door shut and leaned against it staring down at me. He was taller than me by a few inches and I could tell he liked it.
"Good afternoon" I greeted first as I looked at the ground briefly before looking back up at him. The way he smiled made me smile as well.
"There's way too much space between us, don't you think? " His laugh was low as he spoke, his eyes searching mine. I took a few steps forward and settled right in front of him.
"That's better" We both laughed when he said that.
He looked around briefly before looking at me."What are you doing here?" I asked, my eyes darting to his hair. I felt like a school girl with her boyfriend. All giddy inside.
"I came to drop a parcel off for my mom. I was about to leave when you tapped the window" He shifted his weight to his right foot. I noticed today that he was dressed simply. A white t-shirt and black jeans. Black sneakers covering his feet. He looked good. Smooth even.
"Your mother works here?"
"Yes, Mrs Ara Eso" I wouldn't have guessed. My eyes widened in shock.
"That's my English Professor. I love Mrs Eso to bits and pieces" He laughed. Probably because of how my hands flew to my chest in adoration. Mrs Eso was the one person I never had enough of. She was a beautiful, big woman. Posh too. It was no wonder that this man I liked was her son.
"That's nice-" He paused. Looking down and then back up, he continued. His voice lowered.
"You went away before I could say thank you" He chuckled. His eyes caught mine in a brief glance but, he looked away. So, did I.
"It was late and I just wanted you to know. It's not everyday I get to see men dressed like that" Flashes of his Burgundy pants and chain covered chest filled my head.
"Well, thank you. Thank you very much" He nodded in appreciation. His smile was barely there.
"You're welcome" I nodded too. From the way he looked, I could tell he was assessing me. Before I could say anything else, his phone rang out. A deep furrow appeared on his forehead as he sighed lightly. He put it off and looked up at me. I wondered what made him react that way. I smiled.
"I'm guessing you have to go" An apologetic look flashed across his face but he masked it with a smile.
"I'm sorry I have to end our conversation this way" He spoke like I had a problem with him having to leave. If anything, I wondered if he was okay.
"You did nothing. I'm sorry for whatever's annoying you" I offered him a smile. He returned a bigger one. I brought out my notepad and pen. I wrote my number quickly, looking up in the process. Fast enough to see him trying to act like he wasn't looking at me, wondering what I was writing.
I handed it to him and he laughed. His eyes shifted from my face to the paper. He tucked it into his jeans carefully and asked.
"Would you like to talk tonight?" My answer was simple.
"Yes" He nodded and moved to open the car door.
"What time?"
"Whenever you're ready. Enjoy the rest of your day" I waved and began to walk away. His chocolate face still very fresh in my head.
"Thank you. You too" I smiled but, I didn't look back. His car purred to life and the sound became nothing as he drove away. I liked how calm he was with his towering 6-foot height.
As I scrubbed myself in the bathroom, sponge rubbing down my arms, I suddenly remembered that I forgot to tell him my name and I wasn't sure if him not telling me his name was deliberate or not. I had no worries though. Mr bad guy would call me soon.
I hoped you liked this chapter.
I'm trying to be realistic with the book so, please pardon the slow progression.
