Caroline.
"Knock, knock, sleep head."
I open my eyes to see Luca's figure hovering over me with a plate of food in his hand. Just as quickly as I open my eyes, I close them again. The last thing I want is to see that son of a bitch after I've been laying here for nearly eight hours without a bit of sunlight or human interaction.
"Come on, Caroline. I brought dinner." He says to me. Again, I don't respond and I can feel the thin mattress that I'm lying on move as he takes a seat next to me, "Would you rather not eat?"
With my eyes still closed, I mumble, "I'd rather no have you in my presence, actually."
"Too bad." Is all he says back to me.
I wait a few minutes for him to leave but he doesn't budge, after waiting for so long I give up due to the excessive hunger in my stomach and I open my eyes to see him looking at his phone mindlessly.
Without a word he motions to the plate with his eyes still on the phone, "The maid cooked dinner, it's safe to eat in case you're wondering."
"That doesn't mean you didn't poison it on the way down here," I remark, moving the fork through the potato slowly. Normally I wouldn't risk eating anything given to me by Luca but I'm so hungry. I take a taste and it doesn't taste bad at all, but then again, I don't know what poison tastes like anyway.
Luca's voice turns serious, "You're carrying my child, I wouldn't poison you. And regardless of if you choose to believe me, I do care about you. I wanted you to be safe, I told you to run, remember."
"Yet, here I am. Being held as a prisoner."
"You're pregnant with my child!" He raises his voice at me, "I know you don't want this life for them but you know quite well that my children are going to be a big part of this family. They have to be because they're my legacy. I need kids to carry on the business. It's a fucked up life but it's in their blood. Whether you keep them from me or not they have the Acerbi blood in them already."
I tighten my jaw together, angry that Luca thinks this is okay to do regardless of me keeping the baby from him. I'm seven months pregnant and being locked in a cold, dirty basement. This is far from safe or sanitary.
"What happened to you?" I ask him, shaking my head with a sarcastic laugh escaping my lips, "You were actually a decent guy when we met. A little on the creepy side, but you really did seem to have my best interest in mind... Now here you are, like a fucking psychopath, locking me up and making me realize that you're a really amazing actor to make me think that you actually gave a damn about me."
Luca stands from the mattress, staring down at me from where he stands. His dark hues land on me, "I did care about you. I do care. Can you blame me for being upset? This isn't just your kid, Caroline. It's mine, too."
"You lied to me!" I stand from the mattress also, not backing down from him this time. Not that I ever have. If I have something on my mind, I'm going to tell him. "If I knew the truth about you, I would have never let this happen."
"I know," His tone is something new, like he's disappointed or something, "You don't think I know that? I lied because I knew that there was no way in hell you would ever see me as anything more than a part of the mafia."
"Can you blame me?" I shove his chest, getting more furious with him, "Look what you're doing now! You're proving everything you already knew. People like you don't change, Luca. You have me locked down here, starving with a disgusting toilet in the corner... There's no windows. All I'm breathing in is dust and... I swear there's blood on the walls."
