"I'm sorry..." The doctor said, a look of sympathy sprawled across his face as his eyes darted between the two. "There's... no heartbeat."

The couple froze into a state of shock. Adam stood next to the table that Amy laid on, holding onto her hand, both of their smiles starting to falter, neither willing to believe what he had said, both refusing to accept that they had heard him correctly.

"Wh-what do you mean 'no heartbeat'?" Amy asked, a pitch in her voice revealing the feeling of brokenness that had already begun to overtake her as she processed the news.

"Unfortunately, the baby..." Adam looked to the girl beside him, the doctor's voice fading into a nothingness. Amy's sunset curls were draped over her shoulders, her bangs being held out of the way by a pair of sunglasses on the bright summer day. He tried to meet her eyes, but she wouldn't look at him; only down to her stomach. They were supposed to learn the sex of the baby that day, but instead...

"I'm pregnant!" Amy squealed, bouncing subtly on her toes as she placed her hands over her mouth, worried about Adam's reaction. She couldn't tell if he would be excited, scared, nervous, angry; maybe even all at once.

"You're... Pregnant?" He asked, a bright smile taking over his features. Tears began to well up in her eyes as she reached out to him, her own nerves and excitement making themselves known. He wrapped his arms around her and scooped her up into a tight embrace. She let out a nervous laugh as she held onto his neck. Something truly unexpected and life-changing was taking place in their lives, and they were both happier than ever.

The past six months of them living together in their little two-story home had proven to be one of their best decisions, making memories together and moving forward as a couple, only for their lives to brighten even more with a little one of their own. They were proving their parents wrong with every day that passed.

"I can't believe it." Adam whispered, his voice being stolen from him by the overwhelming emotions that were taking control. He put enough space between him and Amy to cup her cheeks gently, placing a passionate kiss onto her lips. "I love you so much."

Amy's smile beamed at him. "You're my once in a lifetime." Adam rested his forehead against hers and let out a quick sigh that morphed into a low chuckle.

"My once in a lifetime."

The pair walked out of the women's center and Adam pulled his sunglasses off the collar of his shirt, trying to use them to hide the pain from Amy, knowing she would see it if she looked at his eyes. He had to be strong for her, no matter how much he was hurting.

"Adam..." Amy said as they reached the car. Adam stopped his tracks and turned to face her. She hadn't looked at him since the doctor told them the news; that their baby hadn't survived. Her deep brown eyes somehow seemed darker, shadowed. She opened her mouth and tried to speak, but was only able to muster a small sound, the tears finally threatening to spill over.

Adam wrapped his arms around her and held her close, trying to absorb her aching heart into himself. If he could just take it all away, somehow make this easier for her. He would grieve enough for both of them if it meant she didn't have to feel what he felt.

Not another word was spoken between them. Even on the way home, they sat in complete, excruciating silence. Neither of them knew what to say to the other, or how they would move on from here. Everything felt heavy, like elephants stomping them into dust. Even the late afternoon sky seemed darker. As they pulled up to the house, they both sat looking at the front door, their memories feeling like grey clouds pooling around them.
