The snow lovingly bit at Atreus's nose. It was falling softly, but it was sure to grow heavy as the night wore on. Kratos took lead through the wood, his heavy feet crunching the twigs, moist leaves, and ice below him. His eyes surveyed the surrounding area, landing on his son as he spoke up. "Father, can we please rest?" Atreus pleaded. He was exhausted, slumped over and holding onto his knees as he caught his breath.
Kratos stopped. They had been on foot since morning, and it was only then that they had eaten. Kratos was more concerned with getting it over with than eating, underestimating how long it would take. By now, it was nightfall, and the chances of catching prey for food was scarce.
Kratos grunted, looking back through the trees and narrowing his eyes. "Aye, brother," Mimir spoke, "I do thinks I'm beginning to lose feeling in my nose. And the boy looks about ready to give in." Kratos sighed outward from his nose, keeping his focus on the trees.
"Very well. But-"
"Oh, thank Freya!" Atreus heaved, collapsing against a tree and rubbing his shins.
Kratos eyed his son as Mimir chuckled. Kratos turned back to the trees. Something beyond the pines kept drawing him to it. Just scarcely, he could see a faint glow in the distance. He leaned forward, the eerie silence causing Atrues to grow worried and enquisite his father.
"What is it?--"
"Quiet, boy." His father ordered as footsteps approached. He eyes the trees, believing something was coming toward them, but the light did not grow brighter. "I hear something," Atreus gasped. He stood up from the tree, collecting his bow and running an arrow along its string. Kratos unsheathed his axe from the clip. Watching and waiting as the footsteps grew closer.
From their upper right, a figure emerged from the underbrush, carrying a lantern and a bundle of wood. They wore a hood which obscured their face. A belt with trinkets around their waist. As they looked up to the tall man with an axe and the smaller with an arrow they stumbled backward, dropping their cargo of wood. "Ah!"
Kratos said nothing, watching their every move. Atreus stepped forward.
"Don't shoot! I won't harm you, I promise. You see?" They used their free hand to pat around their belt, "No weapons!" Quickly putting it back up.
Atreus lowered his bow. You certainly didn't sound like a threat. He looked back at his father who still gripped his axe tight, but lowered it. Atreus decided that was the best sign he'd get that there wasn't going to be a fight.
"What's your name?" He asked.
"Oh, uh.. I am (Y/N)." You replied, slowly relaxing and collecting yourself.
"Why are you in these woods unnarmed?" Kratos barked. Causing another source of fear to run through you.
"W- I was collecting firewood.. For.. For fire."
"Hrrn.. You have a camp near?"
"No, uh.. A house. I live up there." You pointed with caution toward where Kratos had seen that soft glow, beginning to question if you should have shown them where you lived or if you had a choice.
"Oh, you do?" Atreus spoke up, looking happy. "Could we-?"
"Boy." Kratos cut him off. Already knowing what he was about to ask.
"Could you?.." You began, now getting a better look at the pair. Miraculously, the taller, pale man wasn't adorned with many articles of clothing despite the cold. Showing off his muscle wall of intimidation. He was detailed with a red tattoo which covered a good portion of his body. The smaller, "Boy," possibly the man's son- however he was conceived from the mass of muscle- was wearing more fitting clothing, but as he shook off a tremble it was clear he was cold. His nose and fingertips which gripped his bow were tinted pink, and he looked visibly worn out. "..Stay in my cabin?" You finished.
"Yeah, I mean.. If you'd be alright with that. Not like, forever, or anything. But.." The boy was too sweet, plucking the strings in your heart. Even with your attire, you were beginning to feel the effects as the snow picked up pace. You certainly couldn't deny him. You were the least from heartless.
"I wouldn't.. I wouldn't mind. It's too cold to camp out here, you-"
"We do not need your hospitality." The taller man interrupted. He seemed to have a gift for it. But his sterness was more than he needed to assert, and you fell silent as you and the boy looked up at him. "Brother.." Another voice sounded. "I think it's best if you take the offer. The boy will catch cold out here."
"We haven't eaten since we left home." The boy added.
You squinted toward the man's waist. There was another person, evident from the voice, but you couldn't find one. Was the axe talking? A grunt from Kratos brought your gaze back up to his face. He glared down at you, causing you to shrink back.
After a while of an uncomfortable staring contest, the man spoke up, "You will ask nothing in return?"
"Not chopping off my head would be nice.."
Kratos looked back at his axe still in his hand, which you were still quite wary of. After looking at you for a final time, he placed the axe back in its clip. "We will stay only for the night. Do not expect a gift."
Atreus smiled up at his father, which eased you a bit as you cleared your throat and motioned toward your home. "Follow me, then." And Atreus joined you at your side.
