The journey back to your home was led by your lantern lighting the path. Snow collected on your shoulders; which you shook away. Atreus was by your side, chatting with you. "So, you've lived here forever?"
"Not exactly."
"Do you live with anyone else?"
"No. Not unless you count the bird whose nested in my overhang. Noisy house guest."
Atreus laughed, but Kratos said nothing. He hadn't spoken a word since you began. He stayed behind you two, but you could feel his eyes on you.
"I'm sure gonna be glad to sit down once we get to your house."
"I'm sure you will be. How long have you been traveling?"
"Since forever, what it feels like. I don't think I'll ever get up again!"
"You'll have to eat, will you not?"
"Oh, yeah. I'll eat and then I'll lay down for the rest of eternity.. Are you a good cook? I-Is that a rude question?"
"No offense taken. The birds seem to like it, so I sure hope so."
"Okay," Atreus smiled, glad you weren't upset. He could care less if your food was bad, he was just ready to eat and pass out. "How much farther? -- Oh, wait, is that it up there?" He asked erratically, looking up to you. You nodded and he raced up the small hill to your porch, jumping a little at your doorstep. You chuckled softly, holding the lantern you carried up higher.
Now you were with Kratos. He was still overbearing. An aura of intimidation. You looked back and he looked back at you. Blinking the worry away, you turned back ahead and walked to your porch.
Joining Atreus, you pushed open the wooden door to your cabin. Stepping aside as Kratos ducked a bit through your door way. He eyed you, and although your face was obscured by the hood of your cloak you felt as though he saw everything. As he finally fully entered your home you closed the door behind you and secured the latch. You set the lantern on a nearby shelf, switching it off.
"It's so warm in here!" Atreus announced with delight, taking in every bit of your comfy little home. You giggled, "Yes, I- Oh!" You cursed, "I forgot the firewood.. Oh, well. It should be enough for the night." You surveyed the flames in your fireplace, gently prodding it with a metal rod. You tossed a fresh log atop the embers, stepping back to avoid the ash. A cauldron of boiling goodness hung over top the fire, containing your meal for that night.
"Sorry we scared you." Atreus apologized, sitting down in front of the fire and thawing out his hands. "Oh, it's fine, really. With the woods as they are now with Dragur and all, I cannot blame you for getting ready to attack me." You looked back to Kratos, who unlatched something from his belt and set it atop your counter. It didn't take long to see a shiny pair of eyes staring back at you, encased in the sockets of a severed head. "O-Oh, uh?"
"No trouble, lass. Just a talkin' severed head. I won't be much trouble."
Well, though certainly not what you had expected, you now knew where the voice from before had come from.
"Okay, and who might you be?.."
"I am Mimir, The Smartest Man Alive. Pleasure to meet you, m'lady."
"Pleasure's.. all mine, Mimir." You gave a welcoming but concerned smile to the head, who seemed to still have all of his bearings. You'd rather have the talking head than the burly man standing on the perimeter of your eye.
He hadn't welcomed himself by the fire, instead having stood there while you conversed with his group.
Feeling you should make at least an effort, you turned back to Atreus and motioned to the cauldron before him. "The stew should be done by now. Why don't you have a seat at the dining table and I'll get you both a bowl of.. Uh, Mimir, do you eat?"
"Sadly not. Goes right through me. It smells damn lovely, too." Mimir spoke in shame.
"Yeah, your stew does smell really good." Atreus agreed, obliging your offer to sit at the table. "Do you want any help?" He pulled out a chair, not sitting.
"No, no, I've got it. Thank you, though."
"Mm... Okay." He walked over to retrieve Mimir, setting him on the table and having a seat.
Your eyes looked to Kratos as you calmed the liquid in the cauldron, giving it a gentle stir with a wooden spoon. "You can sit down, you know."
Kratos still managed to be ever-so skeptical of you. He said nothing, but slowly made his way to the table and sat near his son, keeping his eyes on you. Atreus must have seen how strangely his father was acting, and got him distracted by starting up a conversation with Mimir.
Relieved, you continued to stir your stew, grabbing bowls off of the mantle of your fireplace and distributing portions of the food to three. You took up the bowls and headed over to the table, placing one down to a grateful Atreus, and.. Kratos.
Taking a seat at your dining table, you sat on the opposite end of it.__
A Third chapter will be written!
