Summary: Tommy isn't dead, because Tommy can't die. Tubbo laughs when Sam tells him that Dream beat Tommy to death, and heads to the prison to get his friend before he wakes up.
No, he's not in denial. Why is Ranboo crying?

Tommy and Tubbo are immortals, able to age but unable to die. Unfortunately, the rest of the server didn't get the memo.
General idea of immortality: Tubbo and Tommy are pretty much normal human beings, except when they're killed through outside means (i.e. wounds, poison), they don't die. Instead, their body remains in stasis until they're willing to heal and wake up. A death heals everything-- wounds, diseases, poison, etc.

"I'm sorry," Sam whispered, his words thick with anguish. "I never should have. . . I didn't think. . ."
Ranboo's shoulders were hunched. "It's not your fault," he said, voice wobbly. "You-- you couldn't have known--"
Tubbo burst into laughter. The other two turned to him, faces set in confusion. He grinned at them. "Stop crying! Tommy's fine."
Sam's expression twisted with anguish. "Tubbo--" he started.
Tubbo shook his head. "No, c'mon, I gotta go get him before he wakes up. He's gonna be upset if I leave him there."
"Tubbo, Tommy-- he's-- he's not waking up, Tubbo. He's dead."
Tubbo ignored him, starting towards the entrance of the prison. "Nah, Tommy never dies. He'll be fine, you'll see."
Arms wrapped around him, stopping him in his tracks. "Please," Ranboo choked out from behind him, voice wrecked. Tubbo was startled to feel tears sliding down the back of his neck. "Please, Tubbo, don't do this."
Tubbo turned his head to peer at the enderman hybrid, bewildered. "Why are you crying?"
"Ranboo, just-- just let him go."
"Sam--"
The warden shook his head, and Ranboo reluctantly released Tubbo. The teen instantly headed towards the prison, Sam trailing behind him. Tubbo glanced over his shoulder. "Uh, Sam, is me going in gonna be a problem or--?"
"I can make an exception." Sam's voice broke on the last word. He fished out his keycard, allowing him to step through the portal. "Just-- just this once."
Tubbo rushed through the waiver signing and security measures, clearly impatient to get to his friend. At last he stood in front of the bridge, fidgeting restlessly as the curtain of lava lowered.
Even from the distance, Sam could see the crimson staining Dream's hands. Tommy's body lay slumped against the wall opposite the man, blonde hair streaked with red and blood pooling beneath his head. Tubbo didn't so much as twitch, stepping easily onto the bridge like nothing was wrong, like his best friend wasn't lying dead in front of him.
Sam yanked the lever and hastily jumped on the bridge as well. He could have just brought the body over himself, but--
"Sam! Tubbo!" Dream stood as they stepped into the cell, spreading his arms wide. Sam's fingers tightened around his trident. "What brings you here?"
Tubbo completely ignored the prisoner, instead shuffling over to Tommy and kneeling by his side. Sam's breath hitched. He waited, waited for the realization to set in, for Tubbo to crumble--
