Chapter Two

The sun was shining brightly through the giant windows. My eyes were heavy when I opened them and my back felt stiff. When I looked around I noticed only two figures still snoring loudly, Zach and Will. Mouths wide open and legs tangled in covers. I searched for my phone in my pillow, (where I always kept it) and took a quick picture of the two. Creeping up from my make shift bed, I made my way into the kitchen.

Heather and Charlie occupied the large kitchen. Charlie sat on the counter, munching happily on a pancake while Heather stood at the griddle making them. "There's a box of waffles in the freezer. " She said, but I was already opening it. I got two out and popped then into the toaster.

I didn't like pancakes. When I was younger I went through this phase where all I would eat was pancakes. Then just out of the blue one day I didn't want them. It was like I had had my life's worth of pancakes and now I'm done and satisfied.

I quickly ate my waffles and rushed out of the room, heading upstairs. I got dressed in a pair of old ripped jeans and a plain long sleeved shirt. It was October and the weather was already getting chilly. I had decided to look around. I needed to find a way to get off the roof and back on easily. I could've picked a room lower to the ground but they didn't speak to me in the way my attic did.

I was walking around the outside of the house when I got to the garage. Will spooked me when he spoke, though it was dumb of me to be surprised. Will was twenty and always in a garage fixing cars. It was his favorite thing to do. He taught me a little over the years but mostly we bonded over the many tedious car trips out to the forests. "I'm gonna miss it Rayne." He said smiling slightly, "Your the only one in this crazy family with a good taste in music." He joked. Okay, when I said tedious I may have been over reacting. Will and I rocked out to older artists such as Nirvana and Radiohead. Blasting music for two hours is definitely fun. So yes it's true, our taste in music is amazing.

I shrugged, a smirk hanging on my lips, "Eh, you never know, I might get bored of our woods and need to take a two hour drive to the middle of no where." Will laughed. "I'm your man Ray!" With the sound of our laughter mixing together I made my way into the garage.

"Thing is Will, I need something that will help me get off and on the roof easily." He pursed his lips and wiped his blacked hand over his forehead leaving behind a streak. It was simple gesture and it was actions like this that made Will one of my favorite guys. I know it isn't nice to pick favorites but when Will did certain things it just really let you knew he actually cared and would make an effort to help. "I'll make you a step ladder to go against the house in the back by your window. There was some wood around the side of the house I can use. Bring me two pieces?" I smiled wide and nodded, sprinting to the side of the house I grabbed two large planks and hauled them to the garage. "Thanks Will! I'm going for a run!" He said something but I was already gone and in wolf mode. I went just inside the tree line and stripped my clothes, leaving them a scattered, messy pile on the ground.

I shifted. It generally hurts to shift but I have done it so many times the pain has turned into an ache. I had school soon and I was as excited as I was nervous. A run was just what I needed. I let my animal instincts take over and I took off, sprinting through the forest. I came across a small clearing, the sun was shining brightly through the tree tops. I pounced in the talk grass and rolled around. If I was a cat I would be purring right now. After a little while I laid down, the warm sun on my face was comforting and soon I found myself falling asleep.

I awoke to a sound I didn't recognize, growling. I was afraid to open my eyes and see what I was up against but soon curiosity got the better of me. I wasn't expecting what lay in front of me, one large wolf, canines barred and muzzle crinkled. To say I was scared would be an understatement, I was terrified. I went submissive and whimpered. Far behind the large animal I could see a red pick. I went off our property and I didn't know it. Then something happened I didn't expect.

He shifted, the wolf turned into a human right in front of my eyes. I had never met another werewolf. I didn't know how to tell when they were part human or just purely animal. Was there a smell or a sign? I tried to picture something I had that the wolf had on his coat but nothing seemed similar.

"SHIFT!" He boomed. The man untied a pair of pants from around his ankle and slid them on. He threw the shirt at me. "SHIFT!"

I did as told. I wasn't one to bow down to others but when your life's in danger you tend to think differently. I quickly slipped on the shirt letting out a sigh when it came to my knees.

"What is your business here!" Once I was human his tone made me flinch.

"I didn't know male werewolves were so mean." I frowned. His eyebrows knitted together in confusion. I was certainly curious. I took a step forward and sniffed him, shrugging when a wolf smell filled my nostrils. "Does it hurt when you shift too?"

"Who are you?"

"Rayne Presley." I smiled. His mood was still tense but I sensed he had no intention of hurting me. Well, as long as I didn't start it. There it is again, wolf senses. "Does your wolf tell you things too? Mine says you won't hurt me if I don't hurt you."

"What pack are you from?" I looked up at him confused.

"Pack? Do you mean family? I just moved here." All I had ever learned about wolves were about the real ones, the wolves who stayed wolves. Heather never wanted me to read about werewolves because she didn't even know what was real and what wasn't. Real wolves formed packs but they didn't have names.

"You don't have a pack?" I shook my head.

"I mean you could count my family as a pack, there's eleven of us."

"Eleven new wolves?"

"No, just me. What's your name?"

"Explain yourself."

I sighed, all work and no play? "I already told you. My name is Rayne and I just moved here. I live with my family in a house not too far from here. I'm sorry I came on your property. I didn't see the red pick."

"Your family aren't wolves?" I shook my head. "I was adopted. Found in the woods as a baby."

"You need to meet the alpha." It was a simple sentence that sent chills through me. The alpha in real wolf packs were the dominate ones, always fighting the others, always in power. If the human version was anything like that, I was sure I wouldn't like him.
