The boy was standing alone in the rain, his clothes soaked as he waited for his mom to arrive.
The school had long since let out, the only lights on being the street lights that were barely visible due to the heaving downpour.
What he didn't notice, though, was the other person behind him, waiting just as he was.
A small hand touched his shoulder, just as an umbrella came over him to prevent the rain from falling on him any longer.
He looked behind him to see a short girl his age holding his shoulder in one hand, and the umbrella over his hand in the other.
"Why are you here?"
The girl's voice was small and gentle.
"I'm waiting for my mom. Why are you here?"
He spoke with caution laving his voice.
"I'm waiting for my aunt."
She smiles when she answers the boy, making their dark and gloomy surroundings seemingly brighten.
When the boy notices that she's still under the rain, he takes her hand and pulls her under the umbrella with him.
The girl flinches at the movement, thinking of her aunt.
"Is something wrong?"
The boy was genuinely curious and worried.
The girl simply shakes her head in response to his question.
He decides to start up conversation again.
"I've never seen you before, what's your name?"
When the girl doesn't answer he decides to take the first move.
"My name is Xavior."
The girl opens her mouth to speak, but a white Honda pulls up. This catches their attention and distracts her from answering.
The girl steps out from under the umbrella, ready to get into the car, but the boy grabs onto the sleeve of her shirt to stop her.
He still didn't get her name.
She turns around and smiles at him.
"I'm Mallory, it's nice to meet you, Xavior."
With that, the boy releases his grip on her sleeve and she gets into her car.
The boy slightly smiles as it drives off.
Happy that he made his first friend.
