Review:
If you've read my other pride books, you'll recognize 'Nathan Burgoine, my favourite Canadian Author and my favourite queer author in general. He lives in and writes about Ottawa, Canada's lovely capital, and he is as he would say, "a tall queer guy writing short queer fiction".
I will eventually be bringing over that review to this book as well but for now I'm going to be furthering my personal agenda. Getting Triad Blood a bigger audience so that 'Nathan will be hurry up and finish this trilogy. (Note: That's a joke, I'm pretty sure he injured his arm or something and so hasn't been working on longer projects lately)
Anyway, the Triad Blood series is an unfinish trilogy about polyamorous supernatural beings. Plus a wizard. In this world, 3 is a magical number. You need at least 3 vampires for a coterie, 3 demons for a pack and 3 wizards for a coven. But for one reason or another, Luc the vampire, Anders the succubus, and Curtis the wizard are all outcasts from their respective societies.
In order to avoid being hunted down by their peers, they decided to form their own triad. A group like this has never been done before but three is all you need and they manage to make it work.
This has offered them some basic protection thus far but things are changing in Ottawa. And before they know it, the three of them find themselves being dragged into political drama involving major players from all three factions.
I thoroughly enjoyed the two books that currently exist and cannot wait for the last one to finally come out. Whenever that will be.
As the author himself is gay, the queer representation in this story feels organic and relatable. And of the three, only Anders ever actually takes any shit for being gay and that's only because other succubi seem to think that being gay will make hunting harder. Anders manages just fine though.
The specifics of the romance itself gets hashed out throughout the series so I won't get too into it here. Especially as even the characters themselves are only just talking about it properly at the end of the second book. But the outcome seems to be leaning towards Curtis dating both Anders and Luc at the same time while Anders and Luc share a bond unique to their triad but with little romantic feeling behind it. That isn't to say they don't still care for each other though and I personally find that this dynamic makes for some excellent interactions.
As mentioned before, there are some NSFW elements in this series. It should come as little surprise as 'Nathan is primarily an erotica author and Anders is a literal sex demon, but it's worth warning anyway. The sex is seldom the main focus of the story though, and even when it does become important, it's mostly for the sake of magic.
