I was just sitting in the park. It seemed like a nice day. The beautiful breeze filled with the earthy smell of rain calmed me as I waited for a friend. We would often see each other secretly since our families were very religious and they were very strict with their belief of 'a man and woman can never be friends'.
His name was Sam Hwang.
His family had put so many boundaries and limitations on him, he wasn't able to take it anymore so he ran away. He left his family and took over the family business as the rightful owner after accidentally killing his father by pushing him off the stairs. He was able to be very successful though. But many times, I've seen it in his eyes and his expressions... the guilt of killing his father. He cut off all contact from his family, changed his name and has kept himself a secret. His family lied to the police for his sake and got rid of any evidence that might lead to him.
I am living in a similar hell. I have seen it so many times. People whose eyes shine of greatness, yet their parents block their potential rather than unfolding it. Their eyes always seem to hold everything... and with one glance... I figure everything out. I have always been like this. Figuring people out and changing my personality to fit them. My parents were always people pleasers and I grew up to be the same. But lately, it seems like my whole family is dragging me and draining me of my capabilities.
A tap on the shoulder and I look behind to see Sam. I smiled as he sat down next to me on the cold bench.
"Hey, I brought you some sweet bread, wanna have some?" he asked while breaking a piece from the bread and handing it over to me.
"Sure... thanks!" I said... sighing after thinking of whether I should consult him. I didn't, it seemed that this was a moment of happiness and I couldn't let it ruin by my sob stories so I decided to enjoy it instead.
The park was empty and the trees swooshed left right by the strong wind.
"So what have you been up to?" I asked, finishing my bread.
"Not much.. the company has been going pretty well so far and I have the greatest and most understanding friend I could ever ask for..." he looked at me and smiled.
I sighed again... I don't think I deserve to be his friend. He has been so nice to me but I have never been able to do something for him in return.
"I was thinking about running away..."
"WHAT!!??" he began choking on his bread.
"Oh, are you okayyy!? here have some water!" I quickly pulled out a water bottle from my bag and handed it to him. He gulped down all the water.
"*cough* *cough* um... that was sudden.." he said. I couldn't tell if he was happy to hear this or not.
"I know.. but I'm not too sure if I really want to do that. My father has well been very strict with me. He's stripped me of all my happiness... I don't think I can live like this... but I still have to stay. For my siblings' sake and for my own sake..." I had let it out.
"Well, take some time to think about it and then I'll see if I can help you, okay?" he smiled brightly.
Then he held my hand, got up from the bench and dragged me away with him. We ran and laughed. Ate a lot of cotton candy and finally went up to some old building and sat atop its roof.
The sun was setting. He was still holding my hand.
" Minsa, I have something to tell you..."
"Yeah, go ahead"
"I like you "....
