She woke up to the sun blazing down on her scarlet covers, she squinted up. It was always warm in the mornings, Marlenes dad didn't know how to fix their broken air conditioner. She held up her hand to shield her eyes from the sun, revealing a large scar on her hand.

She'd gotten the scar years ago, a gift her first sign of magic brought her. For her siblings they all had normal first signs of magic. Malissa made small orbs of light fly from the fireplace when she was seven, Christopher froze water from his bath midair when he was five. Marlene, however, had smashed an entire cupboard of fine China from her grandparents house. She tried not to think about that.

She remembered the bruise on her shoulder from tumbling off her toy broom at age eight. She'd tried to do a loop. Sometimes when she rolled her shoulders a bit to far she could still feel it. Somehow she managed to forget about that till now as she saw it in her mirror. She turned back to the window, closing the nearly see through curtains. Her father had insisted they weren't see through, sometimes she thought he might be a bit blind.

She yawned, stretching slowing, popping her arms, fingers, and neck carefully. She massaged her temples, slowly getting rid of the initial headache she always got after first waking up. Today was a big day. Somebody knocked on her door before slowly opening it.

"Hey star, breakfasts' ready darling. It's your first day of hogwarts today!"

She smiled almost pityingly, she felt bad for her dad sometimes. Out of his four children all of them were magic, he wasn't. With her mother always locked away at work he never really seemed to figure out how to raise wizard children. When she was small she remembered her dad nearly left because he didn't think he was capable of dealing with magic children. She always thought he was capable, she never got it at first, now she did.

He tried, he really tried.

"Thanks dad, I've got my trunk ready."

"Your wand too?"

She glanced to her nightstand, her brand new wand sat in the sun. A sliver of wood peaking out in the bunch from her picking at it excessively. She nodded, her blonde mess of curls bouncing from on top of her head. She liked her appearance, she never really had a problem with self confidence.

Your strong, you've got this.

She reminded herself as she closed the final clasps on her trunk before breakfast;

Your strong.

She reminded herself as she pushed her cart through the brick wall, feeling the atmosphere change around her before she finally opened her eyes. She tightened her ponytail, holding her head high.

She felt the soft fur of her cat; cherry (after cherry coke, obviously) strolling next to her. A few days ago when she was running a round her house aimlessly trying to prepare she'd felt a bit worried that not much people there would know what Cherry Coke was, though now she felt as though she couldn't be bothered.

The platform wasn't like anything she'd ever seen before. The kinds of people her mother and siblings would occasionally bring over shuffled all over. She felt semi out of place in her trousers and her dads old David Bowie shirt. These people were so much different than the people she'd seen in the muggle magazines her dad would pick her up from the shops. They all wore long cloaks and funny pointed hats that she'd once found in her mum's wardrobe. She hated the pointy hats, they were itchy and made her head look small.
