“Oh my God, Ditey, she’s here!” A voice squealed from inside, before I heard someone run to the door. “Hi!” Said the girl in front of me, breathlessly. “I’m Artemis”. She stuck her hand out, and I shook it. Then she looked back into the room and sighed. “Aphrodite, get out here and meet Athena!” Then she looked at Gaia and smiled “Afternoon Mother Gaia. When are you mentoring again? Last session was eye opening” she grinned.
Mother Gaia laughed “I need to induct Athena first, but I would say in about 3 weeks, if nothing crops up.” Then Gaia raised her voice “Aphrodite, I will confiscate that mirror soon, you were 15 minutes late to class this morning”
“I’m coming, I’m coming” Said the other girl – Aphrodite I presumed –and walked to the door. She leant against the doorframe, looked me up and down and sighed “Great, another dork to take up space in my room.” I looked at the floor.
Aphrodite was typically gorgeous, blonde hair, blue eyes, stick thin and perfect. I wonder if she looked this way when she was human, or whether she had changed and adapted as she grew up here. No mortal could have had those looks and not have been murdered by thousands of angry girls in a fit of jealousy. Hell, I’d be one of those girls! Artemis on the other hand was beautiful, but not in an ‘Oh My God shield your eyes’ kind of way. She brown hair and brown eyes, but the two girls couldn’t have been more different. Artemis was willowy and bouncy, with a cheerful grin. Aphrodite was so detached she was almost up the mountain with the rest of the ‘Full-Time’ Gods. I was dark haired with green-y-blue eyes and a slim yet curvy figure. Ava used to call me a skinny rat, but I think even she would have taken that comment back if she’d seen Aphrodite’s waist.
I was still studying my feet and trying not to remember the cruel way I’d abandoned my best friend when Artemis squealed “Come inside then Athena! I want to know all about you. So does Ditey, but she won’t tell you that” I looked up at Artemis and she winked at me, grabbed my hand and pulled me into the room.
Gaia brought my suitcase and put it inside the room, before bowing and saying “I’ll leave you girls to it then”. Aphrodite shrugged off the door and went to her bed, before gracefully sitting in the middle of it and pulling her phone out.
“Don’t text people! I want it to be a surprise at dinner!” Artemis chastised
Aphrodite looked up. “Yeah, it will be one Hell of a surprise when she turns up looking like that” she gave me and Artemis a piercing look, but she put the phone down in place of a mirror.
Artemis scowled “Don't be mean.” She said “Athena has clearly had an exhausting day. Can you not remember when you first got here? Leaving your family, meeting your Mother, before walking all the way to the dorms?” She blew out a breath “Jeez, its making me tired just thinking about it” Artemis noticed me standing there awkwardly then. “Oh my, I’m so sorry, we need to put all your things away and go through the Unwrittens before dinner!” At my confused expression she grinned and explained “Gaia will tell you all the ‘Official’ rules for around here, but there are the ‘Unwrittens’ too, which are the social norms for us students. And you have your own bed – which we need to make, your own wardrobe – which we need to put your clothes into, and your own dresser – which the rest of your stuff can go on.” She indicated the bed on the farthest side of the room, which had a pile on it. If you want to make your bed, me and Aphrodite can put your clothes in the wardrobe if you want...?”
I nodded “That would be lovely thank you” I smiled gratefully at Artemis. I knew we would become fast friends, she seemed to be the perfect welcome in this strange place.
