A retired minister was filling in one Sunday while ours was on vacation. I was curious what he'd have to say. I had no idea he'd say something so profound that it has stayed in my heart ever since. He spoke of scripture reminding us Jesus is our Good Shepherd, therefore that role was filled. That means ministers cannot or should not be thought of as the shepherds for the church. Instead, ministers are the sheep dogs, which is an important role in caring for a flock. The sheep dog keeps the flock together, so they are where they are supposed to be in order to be able to hear the Shepherd's call and do what they are supposed to do. It made so much sense to me in that moment. Ministers are there for a time and then sent elsewhere for someone else to take their place, but the Shepherd, the One whose voice I listen for to guide and encourage me is always there and doesn't change. This comforts me and encourages me. I hope it does for you too. I am grateful for the sheep dog ministers I have known in my life and especially for this perspective of our roles as the flock known as the church.
I know many people that unfortunately have been hurt by a minister or a church goer. First, I'm sorry you were hurt, whatever it was. Second, humans mess up. Please find a better flock or sheep dog that will help you hear the Shepherd's voice as He calls out to you, 'Follow me.'
